Won't marry our girls in homes without toilets: Rajasthan community

Jaipur, Sep 11 (IANS): A community in Rajasthan has pledged not to marry their daughters in houses without toilets.

The decision was taken by the Goswami community at a meeting held Wednesday in Raipur village in Pali district.

"A decision was taken by the community for the dignity of our daughters. We have decided to marry our daughters only in houses which have toilets," Shyampuri Goswami, president of the Goswami Samaj's Navyuvak Mandal in Raipur, told IANS over phone.

Raipur, over 20 km from state capital Jaipur, has a population of over 19,000. The Goswami community comprises 400-500 members.

"We feel that lack of toilets in houses is a major cause for the backwardness of our community. For the safety and respect of women, we feel that toilets are necessary in houses," he said.

"We will request our community members living anywhere in the country to follow this decision. We will send letters to our community members to spread this message," he said.
