Three killed in Bangladesh train accident

Dhaka, Sep 11 (IANS): At least three people were killed when an express train in Bangladesh ploughed into a crowd of street vendors and pedestrians crossing the railway tracks near a market in capital Dhaka Thursday.

The accident, which took place at about 8.45 a.m., also left several others critically injured, Xinhua reported.

A banana trader died on the spot while two others succumbed to injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said an official.

The DMCH official, who did not want to be named, said all the injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

He said three of those injured were in critical condition.

Many poor families live next to the railway tracks in Dhaka and lead life by doing small businesses on railway tracks and frequently get killed in train accidents.

There are many unmanned level crossings of Bangladesh Railway across the country, with most tracks in dilapidated condition.
