50 militants killed in Nigeria's Borno state

Lagos, Sep 7 (IANS) Nigerian troops Saturday stormed a suspected hideout of Islamic militants in the northeastern Borno state, killing over 50 members, the military said in a statement.

The army launched the raid following a tip off about the suspected hideout of Boko Haram members in Kawuri area shortly before setting out on a planned attack on Konduga, Xinhua reported. Also, an officer and two soldiers were seriously wounded.

A fabricated artillery gun, two anti- aircraft guns, an armoured vehicle and assorted types of ammunitions were seized in the process, the statement added.

Boko Haram, which claimed responsibility for recent deadly attacks in northern Nigeria, has seized a number of towns and villages in southern Borno and near the border with Cameroon.

The Nigerian forces have been raiding militant camps and launching air and ground attacks on suspected hideouts of the militants over the past three months.
