Karkala, Sep 16: The forest department staff and police in a joint operation on Friday September 15 seized illegally grown hemp on the border of Dakshina Kannada and Chikmagalur districts here. Five persons were also arrested in this regard.

The team had levelled about 3 acres of land in Kudrekmukh National Park region for hemp cultivation.  They had already grown 700 hemp saplings which were supposed to be planted in this area in the coming days.  The sources said that if these saplings were planted, they would yield hemp worth Rs 30 lac in the next three months.

The arrested have been identified as Anup and Mathew of Kerala origin, Ratnakar, Chandra and Prakash of Shunthi Kumeri.  Case has been registered against them under Karnataka Forest Act.
