Puttur, Sep 15: The Bettampady government college students who were on strike for the last few days demanding the appointment of lecturers have now called off their strike following the temporary appointment of lecturers.  The reports said that the college management has now appointed Commerce and English lecturers on temporary basis.

Earlier these columns had reported about the protest by the Bettampady College students.  The students had boycotted the classes from August 28.  The college did not have English lecturer for the last 10 years.  Though MLA Shakuntala Shetty had tried to pacify the students, she had failed in her attempt as students continued boycotting classes in unison.

It was only at the end of last week that the MLA had second round of talks with student leaders Nishmita, Praveen and Kishan, in the presence of principal Xavier D'Souza.  She promised them that lecturers had been appointed on temporary basis and that soon even the lecturers will be appointed on permanent basis.  Thereafter, the students called off their strike on Saturday September 9 and are attending classes from Monday September 11.
