Modi's dig at 'secular friends' over gifting Gita to Japanese Emperor

Tokyo, Sep 2 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took a dig at his "secular friends" over his gifting a copy of the holy Hindu text 'Bhagvad Gita' to Japanese Emperor Akihito, saying they could kick up a storm and trigger TV debates back home.

Modi had an audience with Emperor Akihito at the Imperial Palace here on the fourth day of his five-day visit to Japan to strengthen bilateral ties.

Addressing the members of the Indian community at a reception here, Modi spoke of him carrying a copy of the Gita during the Japan visit for gifting it to the Emperor.

"For gifting I brought a Gita. I do not know what will happen in India after this. There may be a TV debate on this.

Our secular friends will create 'toofan'( storm) that what does Modi think of himself? He has taken a Gita with him that means he has made this one also communal," the Prime Minister said.

As his remarks were greeted with a round of applause, Modi hastened to add, "Anyway, they should also have their livelihood and if I am not there then how will they earn their livelihood?" Modi said he wondered why nowadays small things create controversies.

"I don't know why, but people create controversies even with such trivial things nowadays, but I have my own commitment and my own conviction that if I meet some great person of the world, I will give it(Gita) and that is why I brought it," he said.

At this point he referred to his audience with the Emperor and presenting a copy of the Gita.

Today I went to the Maharaja of Japan, I have given one to him," he said, adding," Because I don't think that I have anything more to give and the world also does not have anything more to get than this.". The remark triggered another round of applause from the assembled gathering.

BELIEVING IN GOD IS NOT WRONG. BHAGAVAD GEETA IS A MESSAGE OF PEACE. MAHATMA GANDHI WAS FOLLOWING BG AND TAUGHT ABOUT NON VIOLENCE. GEETA IS NOT SECULAR , SAME QURAN OR BIBLE ARE NOT SECULAR THEY ARE THE MESSAGE OF PEACE AND HUMANTARIAN. THESE ARE REALLY PRICELESS GIFTS. SOME FOOLISH AND STUPID PEOPLE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ALL THESE HOLY BOOKS AND ESTABLISH SECULARISM. IF YOU SAY ALL THESE BOOKS MESSAGES ARE WRONG THEN THERE IS NO FURTHER TO DISCUSS WITH YOU.

Modijee, U want to know how we will earn our livelihood? We will still earn it and still pay taxes, even though like the ruling
folks, we don't get everything paid for. U could have shut your mouth, smiled and acted as a respectable person. A packet of India's TEA would have been sufficient. Was your motive conversion? Shame on you for speaking so stupidly out of India. A good laugh they indeed must have had. I wonder how your right hand and left hand sitting besides U there , will have to say now, OR, will they too be like YOU?

@mehindra -Congress has been in power, because people irrespective of their background have trusted them over the century.

Your sanghis gurus were against congress for fighting against the British, Now you tell me who is anti-national.

When India secured independence, the world powers said India is bound to collapse and will eventually end up in a miserable state..... Back then, we were not in a position to manufacture even a safety-pin.

Today, we are a economic power house, a global power, and millions of people have stepped out of poverty due to the socialist or equality policies of Cong.

When Rajiv Ganghi was pushing for reforms in the field of I.T in the 80's , your shakha brothers were opposing it and were looking back at their 17th century 'technology'.

For the above due credit should be given to Congress for "Slowly yet steadily" transforming a once bankrupt and poverty struck nation to the most sought after global destination in the world.

Cong has taken along everyone on the path of progress and has managed to keep India united since '47.

They are corrupt, but then so is BJP-sangheees which is not only corrupt by divisive and fascist.

Who know the King may preserve or use the gift, after all Holy books teaches only good, if we accept truly. Mr Modi,
Gifting Gita or any particular holy book is not a wrong thing but gifting when you are in a official tour, its defiantly wrong. Because you leads a country that is multi-religious, it is imperative that your personal beliefs are strictly separate from that of the state. and constitution of this country requires you to be secular. ”secular people will Mock” is directly implies that you are not interested to be a secular. You are turning disgrace to the vibrant democracy of this country.

No wonder that though he has been elected PM there are many Indians who have not accepted him and maybe will never.

Here, now I have an open question to the " forced conversion " proponents if some Christians gave a Bible to a non-Christian, you will clamor that as " forced conversion" or sharing one's personal experience of Christian life to a non-Christian as forced conversion. How, you will define this act of Mr. Modi?

I am not questioning Mr. Modi's conviction is giving ' Bhagavat Gita" to the Japanese Premier.

Mr. Modi, the law enacted in certain States of India prohibiting conversion from one religious to another religion is breaking the core of the secular democracy of India.

Hindus dont have one book they swear on.. Not ramayana/Mahbharata or Geeta is the most sacred Book for us! we feel divinity in everything we worship..! and specially Hindus lack funding to print a Geeta and give it to every damn hotel room which is also not a sacred place to keep any religious texts!

Also, a african leader once said... "they came with a book, and asked us to pray on our land.. while we opened our eyes, they had the land and we had the holy book"!! that's not right..

Modi is in paranoid of media....He forgot that it is same media which highlighted his performance...gave wide coverage to his speeches and rally..Ofcourse media is critical of any move...But to blame media after becoming P.M is a cheap move that too in foreign country this shows his inability to face criticism and undermine Indian journalism....

What if Japanese P.M blame Japanese media in India..how would have been the reaction...If modi is right he shouldn't be scared of media now he is not any ordinary man but P.M of the country of course he has to face criticism...
Secondly gifting bhagwad geeta or sri kishans story in school is his personal choice I dont care about it...But Japanese is an atheist nation even-though it has Buddhist Shinto past...more than 70 to 80% are irreligious...

It was a very cheap remark from The PM of India to belittle some of the Indians who he calls them as "secular" when he is with Head of another nation and that whilst he was gifting the Emperor of Japan with Bhagvad Geetha.
I do not think any other leader of any other nation would say so of their own countrymen.

Theirs is always by "Hook or Crook" ways.
They mostly depend on others\copy others (like present Govt. using most of the UPA policies which they were against earlier) and trying to take credit for those things.
If they do well by themselves, I will be very happy (But I do not think I'll get a chance for that) and praise them for the good things they are doing on their own. After all we want good things to happen to all Indians.

hindus dont propagate thier relegion as you will never get in history about the evidence of it.we believe that truth will surely reach every body even if we propagate or not propagate.modi has already clarified that if he meets a great person its his habbit of gifting gita.no need to make controversy out of it.

Modiji is trying to create a situation for various failures on this trip of his to Japan.
He is diverting the attention of his BJP followers to this "GITA" presentation to Japanese Emperor, there by telling it will create a communal debate by "Secular" people. BJPians will just gobble up this news....
If with good heart he had presented the Geetha to the emperor, it would have been invaluable. As it is now he has explained himself - he wanted to give Geetha as gift to create debates in India and may be bad blood too among people.....!!!
If Modi is satisfied by saying those things he said, so it be.
To me it sounded like a joke....

modi is not like other leaders who after the end of thier 5 year terms fool
people that i didnt get sufficient time so that i couldnt promise what i promised
5 years back.he always tells that i will fulfill all my promises
before march 2019 and instaed of showing fools paradise to people at the end of his 5 year term ,
he will stand in front of people with the report card of what he has done.thats modi for you.
he has been successful in gujrath.thats why people vote for him again and again.he will do
it now as indian pm also.india is asserting itself in the world sphere and indias lost glory
is sure to come again.china used to blabber against india before, but now it is cautious after modi became pm,
because it knows modi as cm as he had numerous dealings with china and as far as vision and hardwork is concerned
he is similar to chinese and japanese.

    Mr.Jossey,
I see that you are always negative in your comments towards BJP. You seem to very conveniently forget all the good that has been done by the current govt, and indulge in the praising of the most corrupt govt in the history of independent India in UPA2. That too after having seen the way Sonia and RG had governed. I think you need to have a broader mind set, open your eyes and see.

He is a prime minister and has to do that work and not work as a poojari to promote religion while on business trip. Religion has to be kept aside and work business. CANADA state and religion don't interfere each other with politicians and India should note from this specially Modi should learn first to act according to the law. Too much religion makes India tunrs into fanatic ways specially these babus learn to act like good leaders without mixing religion

He is Hero for Chaddis only. For rest of all he is zero.Hero of drama company.Whatever show you make the truth and inside story is always going to come.It is just a matter of time when people within the ruling party get suffocated by his attitude and come out publicly. Already Rajnath Singh and Sushma are uncomfortable with his style. Only people like Jaitley and Javdekar who are grateful to him for lifting their stars praising and justifying everything by FEKU.

You dont worry abt who's not not satisfied.. atleast there is enough room (if at all they are dissatisfied) in NDA to express discomfort, unlike UPA where nobody has guts to point fingers at the joker who created mess. About who's who the hero - country has already shown the results. You can keep running your rants & keep fantasizing, ppl have grown up, try to grow up.
