'University tried to brush off sexual harassment complaints'

Shantiniketan, Aug 29: A Sikkim girl who brought complained of sexual harassment against three of her seniors, was given money for clothes and asked to let the incident slide by, by the Visva Bharati University authorities, as alleged her father.

The University has denied these reports and has said instead that they are looking into the matter and want the perpetrators to be brought to justice. Mousumi Bhattacharya, Chairperson of the Internal Complaint Committee Against Sexual Harassment has said that they were approached by the Principal of Kala Bhavan, the college the girl was a student of and that they have already started the appropriate proceedings. A meeting was immediately called for.

On Friday the girl and her father met with Vice Chancellor Susanta Gupta after which they were taken to Bolpur Station from where they boarded a train to Kolkata. While the actual talks that transpired during the meetings have not been revealed by the college authorities, apparently the authorities have listened to the girls side of the story and will soon be writing up and submitting their report in the matter.

Meanwhile the father has said that the college has discouraged them form approaching the police and instead they offered money to the girl to buy clothes. He also said that while he would be going to Kolkata for now with his daughter he expected the authorities to take some action within the next few days. At the end of which he would approach the police to demand justice be served to his daughter by punishing the miscreants.

The girl reportedly revealed that three senior boys of her college, forced her into a car in the initial and they behaved inappropriately with her. She has alleged that they also took obscene photos of her on their mobile phones and threatened to upload it on the net should she complain against them.
