Vagrants showcase hand-made products in Kolkata

Kolkata, Aug 27 (IANS): From coir weavings to items of pottery and carpentry, products made by vagrants from various shelter homes in West Bengal were on display here Wednesday at a three-day exhibition on the premises of the state run Sishir Mancha.

The 'Bhabaghure Mela' (vagrant fair) showcases works by vagrants trained under vocational training schemes of the state.

"We display the items made by these individuals residing in the homes under the purview of the Vagrancy Directorate. Apart from these, the fair also features items produced by the trainees at the units of the Directorate under the Juvenile Beggary Prevention Scheme as well as some NGOs working with street children," said a release attributed to Biswanath Chakraborti, Controller of Vagrancy, Bengal.

The exhibition, which was inaugurated Tuesday, is an initiative of the state's women and child development and social welfare department.
