“There are several things we need to learn from the British. Their administrative excellence, far-sightedness and discipline are worth emulating. If we don’t inculcate these values, progress is not possible,” Bekkina kalmatha seer Mallikarjuna Murugharajendra swamiji said.

He was speaking after gracing the State-level seminar of presidents and vice-presidents of the Zilla Panchayats at Jog Falls, and pointed out that Shivappa Nayak, Keladi Rani Chennamma should become role models for politicians.

“Flouting law is more of a norm today. With the British, it was not so. No building or road would be built by flouting rules during the Raj. The British bungalow that stands opposite the Jog is a symbol of the British love for nature, “ he said.

The State government should stop looking askance at the Centre for help, when there is a local problem, the seer said. “Celebrating the Suvarna Karnataka year does not mean raving about the past glory of Hampi. The State should come together on issues like language and water sharing. People’s representatives should vow to safeguard resources,” the seer added.

Vice-President of the forum of presidents and vice-presidents of Zilla Panchayats Savitha Ramesh, President Damodar Garadikar, Vice-President Venkaiah Erasi, Working President M Venkatesh, treasurer Srinivas, Zilla Panchayat President Bharati Manjunathaiah, Vice-President and Forum General Secretary K M Krishnamurthy were also present on the occasion.
