Eight killed in Iraq suicide attack

Baghdad, Aug 25 (IANS): At least eight people were killed and 26 others injured Monday in a suicide bomb attack at a Shia mosque in Iraq's capital Baghdad, an official said.

The attack occurred when a suicide bomber blew up his explosive vest among worshippers during the noon prayer at the Imam Ali mosque, located in the middle of a market in New Baghdad district in the southeastern part of the capital, the official told Xinhua.

The toll could rise as ambulances and civilian cars evacuated the victims to several hospitals and medical centres in the city, the official added.

The attack came as sectarian tension has been running high after a deadly attack said to be carried out by Shia militants on a Sunni mosque that left more than 70 worshippers dead during Friday prayers in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala.
