Iranian FM arrives in Iraq for talks

Baghdad, Aug 24 (IANS): Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived here to hold talks with Iraqi leaders, an official said Sunday.

Zarif and the other leaders will be discussing bilateral relations and latest political and security developments in Iraq, Xinhua reported.

Zarif is expected to meet his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari and prime minister-designate Haider al-Abadi as well as Iraqi President Fuad Masoum, outgoing Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jubouri, the official said.

Relations between the two countries have picked up considerably since Saddam Hussein's regime was ousted from Iraq in a US-led invasion in 2003.

The two countries fought the Iran-Iraq War, also known as the First Persian Gulf War, an armed conflict lasting from September 1980 to August 1988.
