Congress slams government over Maharashtra governor's transfer

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS): The Congress Sunday said the government was exercising its power in an "extremely arbitrary manner" over the transfer of Maharashtra governor K. Sankaranarayanan to Mizoram.

Sankaranarayanan was transferred to the northeastern state for the remainder of his term.

"This government chooses to exercise power in an extremely arbitrary manner. It is like deja vu. Kamla Beniwal was transferred to Mizoram and after that, she saw it on television that she was dismissed as the governor of Mizoram. Authoritarianism is really the DNA of the government," Congress leader Manish Tewari said here.

Kamla Beniwal, who was earlier the governor of Gujarat, was transferred to Mizoram, and then sacked Aug 6 on charges of misusing office.

Tewari also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government was going against the constitutional bench judgment delivered by the Supreme Court in 2004.

"The judgment clearly says that under no circumstances because the governor does not see eye to eye with the political dispensation of the state or the government in Delhi and is not sync with their ideology, the governors cannot be treated in such a cavalier manner," he said.

Sankaranarayanan was appointed Maharashtra governor for the second term in 2012 by the previous Congress-led central government. His term was supposed to end in 2017.
