Two women killed by Tunisian police

Tunis, Aug 23 (IANS): Two women were killed Saturday by patrol officers in Tunisia's Kasserine town, the interior ministry said.

According to the ministry, the patrol officers were sent to inspect the roads leading to Kasserine after receiving information about the possibility of an armed group in the area, Xinhua reported.

Officers on one of the patrol vehicles asked the two women who were in a car to stop.

When they refused, the police chased them before eventually shooting at them.

Both the women died on the spot while a third one sustained injuries.

A doctor at the Kasserine regional hospital said that both women were shot directly in the head.

While the ministry offered condolences to the victims' families, it reiterated that the officers warned the women before shooting them.

An investigation has been launched to unearth further details about the incident.
