Passengers on IndiGo plane evacuated after smoke on board

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS): Emergency evacuation of passengers on board a Mumbai-Delhi flight of budget carrier IndiGo was carried out Wednesday after a fire alarm while landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here.

According to the airline, the flight carrying 147 passengers, one infant and six crew members landed safely at runway 27 at 15:35 p.m.

The emergency evacuation was carried out after the Air Traffic Control tower informed the crew that dense smoke was emanating from the rear of the plane as it touched down.

"As soon as the captain got the information about the dense smoke observed from the ATC (Air Traffic Control) tower, he immediately ordered the crew to evacuate all passengers in the interest of passengers and crew safety," the airline said.

"The evacuation was done on the taxi-way after safely landing the aircraft."

The airline added that further investigation into the incident is underway and that no fire was detected after the aircraft made a final stop.
