Rapes bring shame to the country: Modi

New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS): On the occasion of the nation's Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday that rape incidents bring shame to the country.

"Our heads hang in shame when we hear news about rape. I want to ask the parents here. When your daughter turns 10 or 12 years of age, you always question them. But have you ever asked your son," said Modi while delivering his maiden address from the Red Fort.

After a loud applause from the gathering, he added: "After all, a person who rapes is someone's son. Have any of the parents questioned their sons? Why not put the same yardstick for sons too?"

He also asked parents to question their sons about the malaise.
