'Sindhu Sadhana has sailed for maiden oceanographic research'


New Delhi, Aug 13 (IANS): The multi-disciplinary research vessel Sindhu Sadhana sailed July 19 on its first oceanographic research, Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh said Wednesday.

"After sea trials, the vessel Sindhu Sadhana has sailed for its first oceanographic research cruise from Visakhapatnam July 19," he said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

Sindhu Sadhana is acquired Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Goa's National Institute of Oceanography.

"The vessel has nine laboratories, is indigenously built is 80 metres long and 17.6 metres wide. It can accommodate 57 personnel - 29 scientists and 28 crew members," the minister added.

Construction of the vessel cost Rs.266.51 crore.
