For some fans of Narendra Modi, so far, so disappointing as he reverts to UPA govt script

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) : As an election campaigner, Narendra Modi promised sweeping market reforms to revive India's economy and put the country to work. As prime minister, he has dismayed admirers with his performance, apparently reverting to the script of the hapless UPA government he defeated.

To some of the economists and business leaders who as his campaign cheerleaders dared to dream of a Thatcherite revolution, he seems not to be listening. Three months after his win, it is dawning on them that their views count for little.

"As of now, the momentum is lost. They might still recover it, but we have lost the moment," said Bibek Debroy, a prominent economist who co-wrote a book laying out a reform agenda that the new prime minister himself launched in June.

Debroy said that so far there had been no signs of the promised change at institutions sapped by graft and over-regulation that many Indians have grown to revile.

Back in the heady days of the election campaign, Modi and his supporters seemed much more in tune, all lambasting the last centre-left government for years of waste and policy paralysis and building expectations of a regime of "minimum government and maximum governance" that would unshackle key sectors of the economy from the state.

But now there is a sense that the 63-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongman, who made his reputation putting his home state Gujarat on a high growth path, has somehow stumbled in New Delhi.

To be fair, the government has a five-year term to achieve Modi's goal of transforming India into an economic and military power able to withstand the rise of China on its doorstep.

On Friday, Modi will make his first Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Old Delhi, and the expectation within his party is that he may use the occasion to announce bold changes that have so far been absent.

According to economists at HSBC, the government has already moved with "unaccustomed alacrity" on a number of fronts, such as opening up the state railways to foreign investment and providing new guidelines for a more streamlined bureaucracy.

"But the stuff that will lift economic growth over time ... requires deft and delicate handling," they said this week, noting resistance to reform from the country's states and the challenges of pushing legislation through the upper house of parliament, where the BJP does not have a majority.

    1) Everyday there are reports gun-fire exchange in border between pak and India. This used to happen earlier when UPA was in power too, but then BJP had all solutions and making big noises in the streets and in media. Today, BJP seems more like a police constable with a old rifle and asked to do centry duty. Look this side and that side and duck your head. Is there any difference between UPA and NDA? No.
So, BJP was lying of their ability to solve problem.
    2) UPA was in power, BJP was teasing it on the price rise. Today, the prices are risen much higher. Again constable.
    3) Rs. was hitting 60 against dollar and BJP was screeming, calling incapbable govt. Even their election advt in banners showed Rs. will be at 40 under Modi. Today it is going much further. Again a constable.

Give BJP the time. This is the call from so called supporters.
Giving time is a criminal offense, India gave time to congress to bring down corruption. But, they asked for time again and again. India gave, but it failed. Demanding answers and giving no time makes the politicians work, as an Indian this must be our pledge for independence day.

I am not taking sides. My view point is the least he and his government could do to control the "Rising Food Prices" (All that they need to do is justification ...the least..."Roti" followed by Kapda Aur Makaan... later) to the people of this country who have lost faith in congress led UPA government and reposed faith in Mr. Modi's BJP.

Hope you agree. Else you disagree. Ours is a Democracy dear and not an "Autocracy" which we see from last few months!!!
The "Humble Chaiwala" is hiding from the media for their questions now....
Forget bringing back Black Money, taking Strict Action for beheading our Jawans, Indian rupee to bounce back 40 against a dollar!!! (which will never happen in Mr. Modi's life span!!!) and the list goes on and on...No doubt he is a "Great Orator" and a "State(stage) Actor" too(...if possible he can qualify for some Padma Shree award!!)...but when it comes to deliver, he is just giving lame excuses like a "Chaiwala"!!!

During past 10 years, terrorists supported by pakistan used to conduct 50-60 bomb blasts per year including 26/11.citizens lost faith in the govt and sometimes used to wonder, are we the country with more than 1 biliion population and 4th largest army in the world and nuclear power or banana republic with no govt and army to protect us.now after modi became pm ,all terorists supported by pak has gone inside rathole.and i am cent percent sure that thier game will not succeed atleast for another 5 years.that will be a major achievemnet.modi has made security of the country 100% foolproof.this is no small achievement.as far as economic progress is concerned, modis next plan is collecting $75 billion(already in progress) for rapid infrastructure progress with PPP that will be unveiled in near future.modi does not make holow prOmises.when he makes it, he will fulfill it.rome was not built in 2 months.but a strong foundation for secure, stable and economic prosperity of india will be laid before march 2019 by modi, else modi knows he will have no face to show for next elections.he is well aware of that and he is fully confident of achieving the goal.
modi never lost in any elections and never have the habbit of telling silly reasons for the failure.the upcoming assembly elections of maharastra, uttarkand, haryana, jharkand,j&k and bihar will be the mirror for the peoples trust in him.

I am of the opinion that no body can "Steer the Indian Economy" from the "Magic Wand"!!! as they (BJP) thought before coming to power so fast in just 75 days or so...but the point I want make here is the then main "Opposition Party" BJP was not allowing the "Parliament to Function"!!! and every now and then blaming and even openly insulting the Great World Renowned Economist leader (Statesman)Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Doesn't Mr. Modi, the current P.M of our country "Deserve the Same Yardstick" now!!!....because he fooled the Indian Voters by promising them the "Moon"!!! before the General Elections.

Why Mr. Modi and his Team failed now to control the food inflation???
Keep aside all other promises given. That anyway people of this country will ask him in the next five years (Acche Din.... not for the citizens of this country...only for the BJP Core Team and for their Ministers!!!)

Based on the positive performance in Gujarat, Mr. Modi became an instant national hit and hero but the electorate had no idea that Gujarat is totally different than India.

Mr. Modi has clearly indicated that the bitter pills swallowing would be the first steps in treatment, then only the sweet pills can be swallowed.

Now he is doing the perfect and precise house cleaning through putting his very loyal people in every place.

Optimism is very important in our personal life but hyper optimism in the leader of a nation as if he or she is another deity to do miracles will be a misguided unrealistic anticipation.

Less than 80 billionaires, and less than 9000 people with more than $ 30 million asset, and a few thousand millionaires will not make much difference in a country like India with 33% of the population (400 million) living with less than $ 1.25/day. Then go to the next level, the lower-middle-upper class middle class.

See the number of college graduates unemployed? If those people voted for Mr. Modi expecting some supernatural miracles, simply wait patiently.
He may have all the good intentions but the challenge is too huge.

Now the world economy is showing clear-cut signals of heading towards another serious slow down. Bloodshed in Iraq-Libya-Ukraine-Israel etc make the situation far bewildering. All these things will be affecting India, especially as an emerging nation.

The whole world is caught up in a cesspool of economic and social problems on the other hand plagued with natural calamities.

Let us wait and see with optimism!

There is a saying in English. Forget Tigers, Save congress only 44 left. If Ashok Chavan Goes only 43 left…Dint you hear that.

Forget paid or unpaid survey, just look at the commenter’s pre-May & Post May. The only Modi haters are the same people who before elections also hated Modi anyways and continuing to do so. Infact some have refrained form coming out after May 16th. Look at Modi fans , they have only increased with time. That’s the proof. Those who dint vote for Modi will anyways not vote for him in future also and Modi does nto need their support anyways. There are lot of nationalist in India who want India to propher under the able leadership of Sri Narendra Modi. After Chapathi politics dint work out communally for congress they are out now with survey or reports in their controlled media as they are trying to save some face in Upcoming Maharashtra elections, that’s all trying to defame Modi. The show will go on anyways as we have peoples mandate. Grapes will be sour for haters.

Damage of 60 years of ruling by Congress can not be expected to be cleaned and corrected in just 3 months . Modi has asked for 5 years time. Lets wait and watch and give him a chance to do something good and then we can judge which government is good . Is it the Congress or BJP . However in Karnataka I would say Congress is far better than BJP .

I had warned this would happen.

The release last month of the Human Development Index, which showed that countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia and Palestine are making more rapid progress than India on yardsticks like the number of years children spend in school and infant mortality is humbling. Life expectancy in Bangladesh is now up to 70.7 India’s is 66.4 years.

Their kids spend almost a year longer in school than the 4.4 years on average that Indian children do. Cambodia’s life expectancy is 71.9 and the average number of years in school is 5.8.

In the 1970s, Cambodia under Pol Pot’s reign of terror and Bangladesh at the time of its independence were widely regarded as basket cases. What does it say about India’s governance that they have surpassed us on many indicators of health and well-being ...

Jossey i think this is your longest comment ever but i never saw such a detailed comment in the last 10 years while the congress was still in Power. So how do you expect to see rose gardens in 2-3 months? Modi Might be a killer, Modi might be a feku or Modi might be manipulative. End of the day he’s been elected as the prime minister of this Nation with a very clear mandate. Are you trying to compare India with Bangaldesh, Combodia based on 3 months rule by the BJP Government? How can you even relate life expectancy to this BJP Govt.? Everyone has his right to voice his or her opinion and please do not claim that you had warned all you did was picked up an article from business standard by Rahul Jacob and copy pasted the same out here. Good Job Mr.

@ Peddu , Rajesha and all other bhakts -
    1) bjPEEE criticized MMS for becoming PM through Rajya sabha but you seem to be fine if Arun Jaitly is made FM and Defense minister after losing elections and coming through Rajya Sabha... BTW, what hapenned to announcing a separate Defense Minister within 2 weeks???
    2) Out great HRD minister - not only lost elections, forged her affidavits and claims she got a degree from Yale in 6 days.
    3) Bjpeee's promised price reduction and gave us Price increase, petrol increase, rail fare increase.
    4) Before elections the great orator used to tease MMS for his silence.... sad to see that he has become 'Chupendra' after elections.
    5) Who can forget his rants every time there was border firing and now when soldiers are been killed by Pakis, his 56" has shrinks to 5.6" and is busy exchanging sarees and shawls.
6)He never even spoke when China distributed maps showing Indian territory as part of China and when they entered our territory illegally several times.

    In one word...FAILURE!!

Yes,so far so bad and as said by Congress President that Modi is stealing policy and programs of UPA!!!How can change face of economy in independence address ?He was not serious during budgetary session or budgetary allocations or bold changes!

    In a light vain

Adhar would be scrapped if voted to power-Modi but restored with more budgetary allocations!!!!

Centre's UDYOGA KHARI YOJANA would scrapped But with more resources the project UPA still making sounds!!!

Pak taught costly lesson to stop cross boarder terrorism but Modi fed Biriyani and Sherif given away saree for the food. There are 25 serious ceasefire Violations which made loose several soldiers and MODI issues finally statement!!!

Totally Modi's team is inexperienced and they are copying good things of UPA and some ministers just issuing statement for their DEGREE CERTIFICATES AND another one minister accused of rape charges

Atrocities against women rose to all time high as Madya Pradesh stands first and karnataka stands 4th in India.

There are no bold steps to bring economy in to tracks and almost on the economic front,it is like UPA 3!!!
