Nine Muslim Brotherhood supporters arrested in Egypt

Cairo, Aug 9 (IANS): Police has arrested nine supporters of the banned Muslim Brotherhood group in an Egyptian city Saturday for blocking streets.

The suspects were nabbed for taking part in a protest, blocking streets, disrupting traffic and chanting anti-police slogans in Fayyoum city, 100 km from capital Cairo, MENA news agency reported.

Security forces arrested them while trying to bring the situation under control.

In December last year, the Egyptian government declared the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation, blaming it for a string of attacks in the country and banning all its activities nationwide.

After Morsi's ouster in July last year, Egyptian security forces have been carrying out a wide-scale crackdown on his supporters, arresting thousands of them and putting them on trial.

Thousands of Morsi supporters and members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood group, along with journalists and secular activists, have been arrested and imprisoned for long jail terms by the new government led by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
