Amit Shah takes over as BJP president as national council meet begins

New Delhi, Aug 9 (Agencies): Top BJP leaders from across the country, in a meeting of the National Council, today ratified the appointment of party president Amit Shah.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, veteran leader LK Advani and senior leaders Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley also attended the meeting.

In his speech, Mr Shah praised PM Modi and Mr Singh, saying, "They fulfilled the dreams of lakhs".

He also credited the party's workers for its victory. "Workers are the strength of the party. The people's aspirations are in sync with the BJP," he said.

The session, being held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi, will conclude with PM Modi's address.

The national council will also adopt a political resolution that will focus on the political and economic issues as well as the initiatives taken by the BJP-led NDA government and its roadmap ahead.

This is the first meeting of the party's national council after BJP's victory in the Lok Sabha polls.

Top BJP leaders and more than 2,000 party leaders from across the county are participating, besides chief ministers and ministers in BJP-ruled states and Opposition leaders in states where the BJP is not in power.

Party patriarch LK Advani will also address party leaders. Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and other leaders of the party are also taking part in the deliberations.

Mr Shah had taken over as BJP chief on July 9 after Rajnath Singh resigned from the post soon after his joining PM Modi's cabinet.

Though the BJP's Parliamentary Board, the highest decision- making forum of the party, approved the appointment of Amit Shah, the move has to be ratified by the party's national council, as per the party's constitution.

Mr Shah is credited with scripting BJP's stunning victory in key state of Uttar Pradesh in Lok Sabha elections that helped BJP get an absolute majority of its own.

Addressing the meet, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, "Some people may wonder why Amit Shah (for BJP chief's post)?"

He said that when he was looking for someone to lead the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh, he zeroed in on Mr Shah.

Under Mr Shah's leadership, said Mr Singh, for the first time the BJP got 71 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

After the ratification of his appointment, Mr Shah will form his new team that will lead the party.

Sources say the new team will include a number of young leaders as the party wants to focus on strengthening the bond with voters and the common man while preparing for coming assembly elections in various states.

    @ RSRB, Kundapura / Singapore

UPA I & UPA II have done so much good to the country in spite of having "Global Meltdown" problems etc.etc.

I fully agree that Mr. Manmohan Singh Government did not act against the "Corrupt" and the past two years they couldn't control the "Food Inflation" in particular and our "Fiscal Deficit" rate was way beyond what they were showing!!!.

They have done good to the every common man/citizen of India for the last 8 years!!!. Just look back and see how was India then and now compared to world's other fastest growing economies. Sorry dear if you are asking...... now it is everyone's duty to give 8-9 years. Do you have the guts of being patience for 8-9 years)-.....

I won't agree with you and can't have the patience to wait for 8-9 years for this "Jokers" to do any good!!!

It's always easy to point fingers at others when we are not sitting on that main chair!!! and now when the people who were pointing fingers (and not allowing parliament to function) at others sit on the same main chair, they too have to have the patience to listen and accept the fingers pointed at them!!!.

Hope you agree...else you disagree...Ours is a "Democracy" and not "Autocracy"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congress captain is never run my dear, its a challenge !!! Congress never die from our country, For your kind information its a very strong party. The peoples of India saw lots of non congress governments and Prime ministers, like MORARJI DESAI, V.P SINGH, CHANDRA SHEKHAR, DEVEGOWDA, I.K GUJARAL AS WELL AS ATALJI BIHARI VAJAPEYIJI. Only one Atalji taken oath 3 times in 5 years term, that is his goodness and the citizens wish finally he is completed his term of 5 years. The female CM's kick them out. This is not ashamed to our nations. From 60 years like this happened with Congress. Can I give you a ruling days of other non congress PM's mentioned above. Non congress persons never ruled our country. Now the current non congress government is also in oxygen. Wait and watch.

    @ Ajith Mangalore,

No doubt the people have given them a "Thumping Majority" to govern for a five year term. But what is most surprising to the nation now is the P.M doesn't speak at all on "Price Rise Issues", "Taking Action Against the Corrupt", Bringing back the so called "Black Money" - Agenda!!!!

Why is he "Hiding/Avoiding" from the "Media" especially which he used to have frequent press conferences before the General Elections!!! Who is more Maun now - P.M in Indian Parliament today...Mr. Modiji OR Dr. Manmohanji!!!!

Mr. Modi's statement of bouncing back Indian Rupee to 40 against one U.S Dollar!!!!

Where are FEKU's supporters now who thought then it's not a "Rocket Science" for the BJP do that....are hiding now!!!

Barking dog seldom bites!!!! If Mr. Modi had the guts, then he should prove it....if it's not a "Rocket Science" for his government!!!

@ Vincent - True Indeed " barking dogs seldom bite".. I wonder what has happened to his 5.6 inch chest when our soliders are still being killed mercilessly by pakis.

I wonder what happened to his promise of driving away illegal bangla from India, on the contrary, his side kick sushma goes to Dhaka and makes a secret pact to keep those banglas in India.

And his silence on price rise makes me feel that Indians got fooled with the "Acche din" marketing strategy.

If BJP is sure that congress is finished why are they always talking about this party? Why don't they just concentrate on governance. Why don't they just show something different than UPA policies. For example Tomato prices? The rupee is back to its value pre election.FEKU is just nervous as seen by his silence over every burning issue.I am sure BJP is spending sleepless nights over congress every night. The very thought of Priyanka coming to politics ignites nervous statements from Arun Jootley. The voter wants to see magic under FEKU which is not happening.

Although it was exclusive BJP meet,
Amith Shah as BJP Party President was very grateful for Congress and was highlighting only Congress in his speech.
That goes to show, BJP on their own do not have anything to talk about their own party and attribute their victory in the last election was entirely due to Congress\UPA.
Those people who voted BJP to power are daily realising what they did and regret is taking over.
