Queen Victoria statues vandalised at Mathura museum

Mathura, Aug 9 (IANS) : Three life-size statues of Queen Victoria have been vandalised at a museum in Mathura, officials said on Saturday.

The 200-year-old statues of the British ruler were kept in the backyard of the museum for installation at Queen Victoria Park, work on which is underway.

Three men who came to the museum on Friday after buying tickets vandalised the statues.

Security personnel nabbed two of them while the third escaped.

A police official told IANS that they were on lookout for others who abetted the crime. The two arrested youth — Rinku and Arvind Tyagi —are from Vallabhgarh and Faridabad, near New Delhi.

The accused told police they were incensed by the “symbols of British colonialism” and had decided to do away with them.

It is an act of individual hatred. We need not communalize this incident. Had it been so Queen Victoria statues and many more would not have survived till date. Law will take its own course.
Even U.K. and USA are having statue of Mahatma Gandhi and some of our prominent leaders. Past is history. Present is fact. Most of the Countries had their freedom struggle.

    Hate leads to destruction.
If the same people, who have vandalized the statue of Victoria, if they are offered a job in UK, they are the first person to jump and grab it. Also if they are given a choice to work for British or Indian Companies, these are the same will opt for British Companies saying, we have tasted Indian hospitality now let us experience British work culture and no doubt, even monetary benefits & facilities are quite good.

Is Victoria statue is required in India at this time ?

    Dear Harold,
Statues are preserved as a monument or Historical fact.
    No Country destroys such monuments.
Freedom struggles, yes. many countries had their freedom struggles. It is past history, we read and teach the same to our new generation. But we are living in present, we need not be bitter about it. Present is again going to be history.
No sensible person will ruin present by recollecting past and blaming someones ancestors.
If it was so we all would be living in the past only.
But this incident made us to share and exchange our views.
