Man cheated women using matrimonial websites, held

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS): A 30-year-old man has been arrested for cheating several women of lakhs of rupees by befriending them on different matrimonial websites, police said here Friday.

Varun Pal, a resident of Krishna Nagar in east Delhi, was arrested Thursday from Rohini in north Delhi.

"Pal had cheated a divorced woman of Rs.600,000 recently after developing a relationship with her through Jeevansaathi.com on pretext of marrying her," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW), S.D. Mishra.

"On the victims' complaint filed July 17, 2014, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police came in action and Pal was held when he was to receive money from one of his latest victims in Rohini," Mishra said.

The official said that Pal had developed the idea of cheating girls through his fake profile on matrimonial websites taking inspiration from a television show.

He had created multiple fake profiles on different matrimonial websites including Jeevansathi.com, Bharatmatrimony.com and Shaadi.com with different names, qualifications and other personal information.

"He did not use his own photograph on these websites. He had used some photographs of some smart boys after downloading it from social networking site Facebook," said the official.

The official said that he represented himself as a settled person in his profile on these websites showing himself as an IT manager in Microsoft and Sahara group.

"On the basis of these fake profiles, he used to establish links with various girls. He mostly targeted divorced women. He used to chat with the victims on WhatsApp," said the official.

"On pretext of marriage, he obtained their nude photographs. Showing his enthusiasm to marry these victims, he took money from them informing some loss in business. When a girl demanded her money back, he used to threaten her of making her photographs public," the official said.

Before indulging in this crime, Pal had worked as a data entry operator in a news channel, as a call center employee, an insurance agent, community centre employee and as a commission agent for some real estate developers.
