Congress questions foreign secretary visit to Pakistan

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS): Former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid Friday questioned Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh's scheduled visit to Pakistan later this month.

Singh is scheduled to visit Islamabad for foreign secretary level talks Aug 25.

"Is there any improvement in circumstances that they are going for bilateral discussion. It is a clear case of hypocrisy on the part of the BJP," he said at a press conference here.

Questioning the initiation of dialogue with Pakistan, he said: "We are not saying that India and Pakistan should not be holding diplomatic level talks, but BJP used to even question us as to why we served biryani to visiting Pakistan officials".

"During our time Pakistan had promised certain things but did not keep the promise which is why we suspended the talks," he said.

"The BJP should explain to the nation what is the position of sending foreign secretary to Pakistan. Can one handshake compensate the damages that have been done," he asked.
