US Army questions Bergdahl over Taliban capture

Washington, Aug 7 (IANS): The US Army has begun questioning former Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, a prisoner of war of the Taliban in Afghanistan, over how he ended up in captivity that lasted five years, the media said.

Bergdahl was questioned Wednesday by an army investigator at the San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Joint Base, Xinhua reported citing his attorney Eugene Fidell telling San Antonio Express-News.

Fidell said his client has been "entirely cooperative with the process and has answered all questions", though he declined to detail the questions Bergdahl was asked.

Wednesday's questioning marked the formal beginning of an investigation into the allegation by some ex-members of Bergdahl's former unit that the soldier deserted his post.

Bergdahl's disappearance from his base in Afghanistan in June 2009 led to five years in captivity by the Taliban.

He was released in a Taliban-US swap deal in May.

The 28-year-old soldier has been staying at Fort Sam Houston for recovery and reintegration.
