Bangladesh ferry toll rises to 11


Dhaka, Aug 6 (IANS): The death toll in a ferry capsize in Bangladesh rose to 11 Wednesday after seven more bodies were retrieved, the media said.

"Another seven bodies were recovered, taking the number of deaths to 11 from four Tuesday," Assistant Superintendent of Police Kaniz Fatema told Xinhua.

The vessel sank with some 250 passengers in Padma river in Munshiganj district Monday.

According to officials, 112 people are still missing. Many victims of the accident are believed to be trapped below the deck.

Hundreds of relatives and friends of the passengers Wednesday gathered at the accident site.

Ferry and boat disasters are common in Bangladesh, which is criss-crossed by about 250 rivers. Ferry is still a key means of transport in Bangladesh.
