Venkaiah Naidu's surprise check catches latecomers off-guard

New Delhi, Jul 29 (Agencies) : Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu was in for a rude shock when he made a surprise visit to ministry's office, Nirman Bhawan, on Monday. What greeted him when he visited the office at around 10 am were empty chairs and tables as many of the officers and junior staff were found missing from their seats during office hours.

Taking a serious view of the matter, Naidu has ordered that show-cause notices be issued to the 80 odd erring employees.

Reports added that the minister has directed the installation of biometric attendance system at the UD ministry and the Parliamentary Affairs ministry, the two ministries under his charge.

Naidu has also asked senior officials to keep a tab on regular latecomers and ensure that they are made to fill in for a day's causal leave if they come more than 15 minutes late than the stipulated time.

The minister had made a similar check last month but had let off slackers with a mild warning.

However, his cabinet colleague Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar had acted tough against such officials when he conducted a similar check last month.

Javadekar had then asked the latecomers to take half-day causal leave as a form of mild punishment and directed officials to ensure that the staff is at their seats by 9 am.

Soon after taking charge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had himself inspected the chambers of his officers in the PMO to ensure that officials are present in office by 8:45am.

Last month I visited sub-registrar office for the registration of land. I got the appointment of 09:15 am and I was there at 08:45 am. Staff started come to office at 09:15 am and most of the staff after greeting everyone they switched on their computers and started the read news papers and some of them watching cricket matches and entire public who was waiting outside they can see what they're doing. But no one bothered about it. The land registration process completed around 12 noon which was hardly a half an hour's process.

This is a positive step. This will make the staff to be punctual.
Hope VN will ask for work-sheets too to be filled in by the employees with time frame for each work done by the employee. With such measures,
the work in G\departments will improve.
Most of the Government employees including Ministers have their own private business which is looked after during the time they work in Govt. offices.
Hope VN and other Ministers periodically check and not just once and forget.
    Good move Sir.

Very nice. It is a bold step to improve the productivity.

Should also be checked for taking lengthy lunch break and early quitting office.

The corporate culture in govt. offices would definitely help progress the nation.

A surprise visit was good to know employers to take their Job serious.but I am afraid,it may cool down after some time and again beginn from old Timing .And it should not only for employers but to the Ministers also apply to come in time to the Office and at their appointments .when they come too late, should also give back their payment to a certain amount to Govt.or to a social Institution.Same rights to all .They should go with a good example Forward.

Why congress has not checked this before.
One hour late means what a loss to tax payers money 1hour X 25 Days X 12 Months.
Some are may be not attending the office who knows, only coming in between just to sign the muster book.
If you go to calculate all this since independence what billion dollars our nation lost.
