India backs UN resolution on Gaza, takes strong stand against Israel

Geneva, Jul 24 (NDTV):  India has taken a strong stand against Israel by voting in support of a UN resolution to launch a
probe into the country's offensive on Gaza and has condemned the "disproportionate use of force".

India joined Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa to vote for a Palestinian-drafted resolution on "Ensuring Respect for international law in The Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem".

Supporting calls for an immediate ceasefire, India said it is "deeply concerned at the steep escalation of violence between Israel and Palestine, particularly heavy airstrikes in Gaza and disproportionate use of force on ground, resulting in tragic loss of civilian lives, especially women and children and heavy damage to property."

Top government sources defended the statement, saying India has good bilateral relationship with Israel "but on multilateral track Israel is seen as violating international norms" and India has always voted against Israel on issues of violation of international humanitarian law.

India, the sources said, gained little by supporting Israel on this, adding that it makes no sense to support a country seen as going against international norms.

New Delhi also points out that Israel has not supporting India on any international forums. "Abstention not an option, it would have been seen as change in policy towards Palestine. We don't want to undermine that," said sources.

In the 46-member human rights council, 29 countries voted in support of the resolution while 17 nations abstained.

The United States was the only nation to vote against the resolution. European countries abstained.

Over 680 Palestinians and 30 Israelis have been killed in the 16-day conflict at the Gaza Strip, with both Israel and Hamas refusing to back down.

India's strong stand at the UN comes after the government on Monday blocked in Parliament the opposition's effort to move a resolution condemning the death of women and children in Gaza, with Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj underscoring that there was no question of taking sides when India's policy had been to maintain friendly ties with Israel while also supporting the Palestinian cause.

For your question taking back our lands , Yes We have rights to take back our belong Lands. Unfortunately ,It was British who made the mistake in Partition , that led to long standing enmity between India and Pakistan.

    Dear mpd,
    A sensible reply though!
War leads only to destruction nothing else and humanity will be in the losing side!
But 'Hamas ' has been elected by their own people rite, its crystal clear that who takes responsibility of their citizens when their people's life are threatened!
May i know what will be your opinion if our great peace loving mother India faces this type of crisis in future, coz when retaliating bombs/weapons used by either side don't differentiate!
Or we will start the same old tune by saying our elected GOVT is inefficient to safeguard its citizens
Or if GOVT takes any aggressive step towards our aggressive neighbor then again world will start supporting the one who is in more trouble!!
    Thank you

As far as India's weapon accumulation is concerned history proved that it is for deterrence and ONLY for deterrence! In case of attack from external forces than only we are using the weapon...that too in a 'soft' manner (u know what it is to call soft with weapons!). Having said that India never acted like "we are paying for weapons, Israel were supplying same and that's it"...or "Palestine attacked first / they didn't support us previously we will not support"...something like that, whenever the time demand for stern policy, India came out with its clear view (it may be UPA OR NDA though way of communication/expression are different). And that is what makes India stand tall.

In this case where was Arab country neither Indian?

Why they dint raise a voice against this?
why they dint raise voice when there was attack on Christians in Afghanistan/ Pakistani as well as in Egypt and Syria? or pandiths in Kashmir.

Dont mix the religion with with politics.

We the public must try to understand the situation that as a nation what is good for India. Did we go ground offensive when the Kargil happened? no right...all we did is just secure our land. If we wanted we could have intrude Pak, but its not in our culture! And no world power can deny that India is a peace loving country and cannot force themselves involve in matters like Kashmir. Very unfortunate stand. I totally oppose this. Our govt should have been neutral. Modi should not have taken decision to please vote bank like congress. India cannot afford pleasing some sects and falling in red eye of one of its main partner supporting India,s defense and military intelligence. India should realise what is good for the country as a whole and not on individual sects. If India has to listen to each parties queries the we will have to abandon relations with all the neighbour's or all the countries because somebody will have problem with somebody and finally everybody will have problem with everybody. This decision of the govt is really unfortunate. That too qe dint expect this from BJP. If Bjp thinks they can get few more Muslim votes they are wrong. Those brainwashed who have never voted Bjp will anyways never vote in future also even if Bjp gives them 100% reservation. Then what's the point in spoiling relations with our friends just for few votes?    I hope Israel will understand the circumstances behind Indian decision and keep supporting India to build a strong defense system like Israel.  ‎

Why neutral stand ? India firmly supported Palestine during beginning of conflict. Mahatma Gandhi and Pandith Nehru sided with Arabs. When Palestine issue was brought before the new UN in 1947, INDIA supported Arabs. While majority nations recommended for partition plan India voted against it. it voted against isrels admission to UN.Even after Jewish state recognized, India didn’t establish normal diplomatic relation with it until 1992. Now India has military tie up with Israel but the question is for that reason should we keep quite on its offensive raid against innocent People? For this reason should we keep our noble policies/principles under carpet? What about our strong economic and interaction with the Middle East? Can we ignore that? India should continue to take a strong stand against Israel. See Mahatma Gandhi’s statement in 1946 “Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French. It is wrong and inhuman to impose the Jews on the Arabs... “Jaihind.

Its wrong to say by this act we , Indians have to washaway with Kashmir! Why...? Because though the recent face off started by Hamas & retaliated by Israel, after couple of days Palatine stopped attacking and world started requesting Israel to stop the offensive. But as they are not stopping this resolution is being brought in. Where as India, at first place never attacked pakistan for Kashmir reason, only retaliated. If we keep on offensive with Pak, then UN intervention would have been justified by world! So being a peace loving country and its soft Bharatiya cultured approach.

Though they were right in retaliating, they should have been slowed down once Palastenians cried for cease fire. So now for India this is the best option...to stand with justice. Though it looks like supporting Palestine...but, it is not...IT IS in support of humanity.

Exactly Jossey. And now Israel offered assistance in Feku's ganga cleaning project. Let Israel withdraw and Palestine join hands with Feku.

Unfortunate!!!! we have succesfully ditched ISRAEL's friendship and its help in combating pakistan and other terrorists!! Modi has ditched us!! But Modi must keep in mind, if he has done to get Muslim votes, forget it.. He will never get it!! ..however, he will lose other voters!!
    5 reasons in my opinion

    1) OIL crisis/ and our need of ME countries
    2) IRAQ hostage crisis resolution has come due to Saudi and rest of arab intervention..! They create problem, and then they solve it to get friendship
    3) Domestic voter influence, impeding elections in key states!! appeasement
    4) Impressing BRICs countries!!
    5) Irritating Obama no end!!

Basically, we never have been and never will be superpower!! Modi or anyone.... !! there was NO need to vote YES!..u cld have abstained..! when germany, france, japan, go against.. and a resolution raised by Pakistan... Sushma give me a break!!

Like my previous comment "Israel is Arrogant" and Arrogant is not Compliment word again...as we see in Holy book Israel has given Special status...but we are living present state and No Country is special in realistic ...Israel must ditch its arrogant attitude and should solve land issue ..which occupied from Palestine before..India as a peace loving nation shouldn't support violence...we should stick to our policy and non-violence is our identity..

It is unfortunate that a democratic country with a similar problem like Israel (another democratically elected nation) on its border supports the militants in Gaza, who hold humans as a shield. Is it any wonder that the Kashmiri separatists and their sympathizers use the same term, 'disproportionate force' to describe India's efforts to put down terrorism in Kashmir?

Our backing of UN resolution on Gaza is not in favourable of country's interest which may make us to land in 'naa ghar ka..naa ghat ka...'
On the other hand no country has voiced concern against Pakistan's continued cross border terrorism and unprovoked firing in the border by Pakistani troops recently resulting in killing of three of our brave soliersWe are always on the receiving end.
