Veggie, fruit prices push inflation to five-month high of 6.01% in May

New Delhi, June 16 (Reuters) :  India's wholesale price inflation rose to a five-month high in May, adding to worries that disappointing rains could lead to higher food prices and turmoil in Iraq could cause a spike in global oil prices.

Wholesale prices in May rose a faster-than-expected 6.01%, driven mainly by higher food and fuel costs, government data showed on Monday.

The rise compared with a 5.4% year-on-year jump forecast by economists in a Reuters poll. In April, wholesale prices rose 5.20%, the slowest in two months.

The data comes days after the release of data showing consumer price inflation hit a three-month low of 8.28% in May. The central bank closely tracks consumer inflation when setting interest rate policy.

Elevated costs for for food items, particularly vegetables and fruits have added to inflationary pressures. Higher potato and onion prices pushed up wholesale food inflation to 9.50% last month from 8.64% in April.

Upasna Bhardwaj an economist at Ing Vysya Bank said the numbers were "very shocking."

"Though it is a broad-based uptick, food prices have surged sharply," she said.

She expected price trajectory to be volatile in the next few months due to uncertainty over the monsoon rains and outlook for crops.

Bond yields fell and the Indian rupee weakened after the data. India's benchmark 10-year bond yield rose 3 basis points to 8.64%. The rupee weakened to 60.23 per dollar, its lowest level since May 6.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who took office on May 26, has listed fighting inflation, particularly food inflation, as his priority, and low low rainfall will make it harder for him to bring prices under control.

The weather department has predicted below average rainfall between June-September this year, which could hit summer crops such as rice, corn, soybean and cotton, exacerbating price pressures and impacting economic growth.

No doubts there will be chaos in India and people will be cursing the government. Running a government of 1.2 billion people are not as easy they spoken at the rallies conducted all over India.
Just the will is not enough you need experience, every lay man has the will to change the government but it is a dream.
The present government is still on dreams. By the time it comes to reality. Then, Dollar will be 100 per USD, Onions and Potatoes will be 50 per Kg, Petrol and diesel will be at 100 per litre, Gas at 500 per cylinder, Chinese companies will take over all industrial jobs, many of Chinese car models will be launched and in the long run we will be dependent on China for Onion, Potatao, Gas, Cars and Petrol.

Save fuel and have billions of dollars from oil import bills and crores of rupees from subsidies.
The opportunity is to have surplus balance (instead CAD) and comfortable forex reserves, new development projects, job creation, healthcare, and poverty reduction.
Instead of carrying and moving the burden on wheels as infants, utilize it as a powerful pushing force.
The option is to save fuel, eliminate pollution, reduce costs and improve capacities.
Perhaps it is a move from lengthy and expensive evolution to a rapid revolution of incredible solutions and amazing benefits.

First of all let me say that we are all suffering from the inflation which affects every one more so the middle\poorer section.
I can not blame BJP Government for this as we depend on outside world for certain imports like oil, gold etc. and the fluctuation of prices on these items affect our economy very much there by making us aam admis suffer more.
Now the real point is when inflation was happening during UPA Governance, this BJP was bringing the Government to its knees holding them completely responsible for the soaring of prices and it's inability to check\control. On that basis they fought the election and pocketed the voters and won the election and lo they are the governors today who promised "Rama Rajya" meaning aam admis do not have to fear of escalating prices on commodities any more.
In that context, why Modi and his Government the ever lying BJP is warning people of hard times ahead. BJP should not bother at all of any hike in prices internationally and that should not affect our economy!! They should govern the land without inflation and without anxiety to the people in it.
Why the BJPians are quiet now and not demanding the Govt. for immediate action to curb inflation?
Are they not suffering with this inflation now?
It is best we all join together and put pressure on anyone governing us to do the needful on a priority basis and economise on the items which are really affecting us.
(petrol\oil ...) By doing so we will be helping our self greatly and lessen the burden on Govt. who can then divert their attention on other developments.
Just do not blindly believe any one promising "Rama Rajya"!!!

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is ready to take unpopular steps
to improve the nations economy and fiscal health as his three-week-old
government prepares to unveil its first federal budget next month. Its
necessary to take steps to improve financial discipline and improve the economic
health of the country, Modi said on June 14 in a speech in Goa that was
posted on his website. I know my popularity might go down due to these hard
decisions, people might be annoyed with me, but they will appreciate it later. Modi
faces the challenge of reviving Asias third-largest economy after his party
became the first in 30 years to win a parliamentary majority in India. Growth is
holding near a decade low and retail inflation has averaged about 10 percent in
the past two years, eroding the purchasing power of more than 800 million people
who live on less than $2 a day. Modis comments suggest the seriousness the
    government
is attaching to the fiscal correction, N.R. Bhanumurthy, an economist at the
National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, a government-backed research
institute in New Delhi, said by phone. Fiscal indiscipline by the congress has been one of
the main reasons behind Indias economic woes. So mr. ismail you have got the answer now go back to the drawing board & start analyzing why your communal congress lost. I hope you will understand what is written above otherwise strch your head for explanation.

But they have not eaten up the coal, Then where the coal has gone ???? Is it not available in Mines also ????
