Looking forward to welcome Modi: US

Washington, Jun 6 (PTI) : The United States is looking forward to welcoming the new Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Washington, but refrained from making any announcement on the possible trip in September.

“We look forward to welcoming the prime minister to Washington, nothing to announce on timing at this point,” the State Department Deputy Spokesperson, Marie Harf, told reporters on Thursday at her daily press conference.

“I don’t have any more details. We said we look forward to welcoming him,” Harf reiterated when pressed further.

Earlier last month US Secretary of State John Kerry had welcomed Mr. Modi to U.S. during his meeting with the Indian Ambassador to the United States S. Jaishankar.

The Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Nisha Desai Biswal is scheduled to hold meetings in New Delhi over the next several days establishing the first high level contact between the Obama Administration and the Modi Government after the latter came back to power on May 26.

Ms. Biswal, who is Obama Administration’s point person for South and Central Asia, reached New Delhi on Friday from China.

“Some very productive consultations w (with) my Chinese counterparts on regional connectivity,” Ms Biswal tweeted.

In a statement, the North American Punjabi Association welcomed the purposed meeting between Mr. Modi and Mr. Obama in Washington in September.

“This meeting is a step in national interest,” said Satnam Singh Chahal, its executive director.

NAPA, he said, will write to Mr. Modi to raise the issue of Security and Safety of Sikhs residing in the United States.

The US government has always tried to have a equitable diplomatic relations with the democratic nations of the world, in-spite of their differences now and then. In 1970's Mrs. Indira Gandhi was invited to US on a State visit even though she was totally alienated with Soviet Union and the dictator rulers of the world, against the policies of the west. Now Mr. Modi will receive a warm welcome at DC as both the countries have to take care many issues of mutual interest, which are beneficial to India, US and to the world.

It looks like some commentators do not understand the diplomatic immunity which Modi acquired after swearing in as India's PM. Now USA cannot refuse visa for PM of India and India cannot refuse visa for President of USA as both of them are representing the people of their respective countries in their official capacity, not as Modi or Obama.

A few years back Muammar Gaddafi, the then premier of Libya, who arranged to blew up Pan Am aircraft carrying 250 passengers. He was banned from visiting US, but as per diplomatic agreement, he visited USA in 2009. No hotels in the USA have accommodated him. Finally, he has to stay in the tent on a private land. All his security guards were barred from embarking the plane.

Modi looks like a refined man now and he knew the consequences of atrocity against the minorities. Yes, USA is looking for business partnership with India.

As saying goes.. there is no friend or foe when it comes to business. Obama as a Harvard graduate and Modi as Gujarathi chaiwaala, they both know what business is.

Many congis thought Modi will war on Pakistan as soon as he becomes PM. His friendly approaches with Pakistan surprise money.

This is our great Hindu culture. First we try to solve any problems amicably, before taking swords in hand. Vajapayee also practiced same.

Pakistan should stop terrorism, border tensions. This is the strong message Modi did give to Sharief. If they don't accede to our request we have the actions with us.

Good foreign policy by Modi Govt.
Though he criticized previous UPA for going soft on Pak, he followed same policy by:
    1. Extending co-operation with SAARC
    2. Accepted invitation from USA

There is no benefit in showing EGO.
Even USA, who didn't give VISA to Modi, shed its Ego and invited him. This is called diplomacy. Do whatever is in the interest of the nation.
There are no permanent enemies nor friends.
Friends turn foes and foes turn friends also. It is all matter of time and convenience.

..there will be no business as usual with USA henceforth..MODI govt will push only business cooperation with USA, he will not emphasis on strategic partnership..US always backtracked when INDIA was in trouble, they banned us from getting latest tech from other countries, pressured INDIA on IRAN/SRILANKA issue but always turned blind eye on Indian concern on Pak..MODI will strengthen ties with nationalistic countries Japan, china & other neighboring countries..even relationship with IRAN will improve..He will openly announce freindship/partnership with ISAREL, since INDIA always down played relationship with ISAREL bowing down to pressure from some quarters of society..now onward it will not be an issue..
