Trouble for Smriti Irani over contradictory details in affidavit

New Delhi, May 28, 2014 (PTI): HRD Minister Smriti Irani was today at the centre of a raging controversy over her educational qualification after it emrged that she had made contradictory declarations when she contested Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2014.

The Congress, one of whose leaders struck a different note, escalated its attack while the BJP hit back asking answers from it about the educational qualifications of Sonia Gandhi.

Ever since, Madhu Kishwar, a women's rights activist, raked up a controversy over the fact that Irani, just a 12th Pass, has been made HRD Minister the issue has only snowballed.

The 38-year-old television actor-turned politician preferred to keep mum. She refused to comment when media approached her.

There was more embarrassment for the BJP and the new government after it emerged that Irani had given contradictory declarations in her affidavits in 2004 and 2014 when she contested Lok Sabha election from two different constituencies.

As a candidate in 2004 elections from Chandni Chowk in Delhi, Irani had declared that she had a Bachelor of Arts degree.

"B.A. 1996 Delhi University (School of Correspondence)", she had written in the column which seeks details of University education and the year in which the course was completed.

In the same column of the affidavit filed in the 2014 elections from Amethi, Irani has said,"Bachelor of Commerce Part-1, School of Open Learning (Correspondence), University of Delhi-1994".

In 2012, the Supreme Court had ruled that false disclosures in an affidavit can be a ground for rejection of a candidate's nomination.

Latching on the issue, the Congress party said this was a mis-statement, distortion and a criminal offence which has electoral consequences.

"We don't know which is correct--2004 or 2014? Both can't be true," party Spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

When asked about Congress raising educational qualifications of ministers in a democracy, he said,"we had not raked it up and we are not trivialising it".

To another query about Sonia Gandhi's qualification, he shot back,"she is not a minister."

Irani, however, got support from JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav who attacked Congress for raking up the issue.

Kishwar, who started it all with her tweets critical of Narendra Modi making Irani the HRD Minister, was unsparing saying education and research in India was in a shambles and something urgent was needed to be done to lift standards in the system.

Somebody with a vision was needed for the job, said Kishwar, a self-confessed admirer of Modi.

Kishwar said that as someone in the academia she felt that the HRD ministry was a very "vital" ministry and that India's education sector was in a mess and somebody with a vision was needed.

The HRD ministry requires handling chief ministers, because education is a state subject and also requires handling vice chancellors, she said.

"HRD needs a head who can steer dexterously between Left and Right extremists in academia to define sensible course unfettered by partisan agendas," she had said on Twitter.

Slamming the Congress, Union Minister Uma Bharti questioned the educational qualification of its party president Sonia Gandhi.

"I want to ask them (Congress) what are the educational qualifications of Sonia Gandhi, because she has headed the UPA and gave directions to the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The entire UPA government would stand with folded hands outside her door. So Sonia Gandhi, who ran the UPA government, what are her qualifications," Bharti asked.

Another minister Santosh Gangwar said he wants to ask Congress how educated was its president Sonia Gandhi.

Joining issues, BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Congress leaders should shed their "arrogance" after the party's defeat in the Lok Sabha polls and do introspection.

He said the party was defeated in elections due to the "arrogance" of Congress leaders but they are still not ready to leave their arrogance.

"Congress leaders should now stop using abusive words against BJP leaders. Congress should respect the mandate of the people," he said.

Congress leader Ajay Maken yesterday took a jibe at Irani's educational qualification.

"What a Cabinet of Modi? HRD Minister (looking after education) Smriti Irani is not even a graduate! Look at her affidavit at ECI site pg 11," he had tweeted yesterday.

Bharti said Congress had raised questions about her candidature from Jhansi in the past by saying that she belonged to Madhya Pradesh and was making a similar mistake in this case.

"First the Congress should show certificates of Sonia Gandhi to show how educated she is and from where. Only then they can ask such questions (about Irani)," Bharati said.

She said that it was not necessary that a health minister should be a doctor but what matters is how a person works.

"Sonia Gandhi should tell about her certificates or else stop Congress from making such comments," she demanded.

However, senior Congress leader Manish Tewari had a different take on the issue when he said any attack on the government should be on substance and not superficials.

He said that these kind of remarks used to emanate from the BJP in the early 2000s but had got decisively buried after UPA's two successive victories under her leadership.

"It anybody is attempting to question the political sagacity of Sonia Gandhi, I think possibly they are blowing a trumpet which nobody is interested in," Tewari said.

However, to a question on the Irani controversy, Tewari felt that criticism of the government should be policy based rather than personality centric.

HRD minister is just 12th pass!!!! Then what is the need of education? What kind of inspiration that our youth will get ? Proper graduation (not correspondence) is minimum educational qualification in today’s world which make a person to think high and think differently. I am not telling HRD minister must have hundred degrees or health minister should be a doctor first. But he should have minimum qualification to understand the educational needs of youth. If they can produce false declaration, the what about the public following them? Taking left-right decision is not big thing. But what are the consequences of such decisions ? Indian education especially in rural places should be boosted up to global level. Its not a day night job to streamline it. One shoud have enough understanding of the current ongoing requirement.

I wonder whu all these hangamas ? Ever these Congi bothered about their ministers earlier, if they were qualified or not. If we dig back, I am sure there will be abig list of such candidates. More over, as some one said, Sonia who was controlling the whole nation during UPA, what qualification she had to run the country. she was not even knowing how to speak Hindi properly. Still they were standing hands holded in front of her door. Now they got this small issue to speak and make hangama about. Being the PM of the country, Modi will be knowing who should do what. who are you to comment or dictate on that. Let the show run and start delivering. before that itself you people have started with all thse contraversies. Shame on you. Looks you are really scared as this Govt is seen quite aggressive and sure of brining change in the country. So, you are afraid and panic, looking for such stupid reasons to raise contravesries. Please stop this and see how the nation is changing.

But she never studied in any college anywhere..this is proved by subramanian swamy..She did gone to a Catholic run seminary-school meant for poor family students..there is similarirty between SONIA & SMRITI on their humble begining..SONIA was bar waitress & SMRITI worked in MCDONALD..but still SMRITI 12 , but SONIA is just 10th pass heading UPA Govt/ruling INDIA for 10 years!!..

Faking the degree is an offense. While working abroad, the verification of qualification is done by attestation of our degree certificates from the respective countries to ensure we are not faking the degree certificate. Yes, indeed, it is a good suggestion. The idea of all degrees of all universities in India were to be computerized and any one could see whether it is genuine or not. Being, I presume, many of our politicians are having fake degrees, the idea has still to see the day. But, even then what one can do, when so many people have genuine degrees on record, but acquired through unlawful means, by bribing, by copying and all sort of methods that are available for a cheat in the open market ?

If Sonia has cheated, she also should be booked. Sonia's education was a matter of laughter, mockery and criticism for the last 16 years. Does BJP also wants the same thing with this minister? Is educational qualification a requirement to be a Minister? If not, there shouldn't be a column asking for educational level in the form. Even if she said she was as Ph.D or 1st grade that does not disqualify her to contest in the election.

If the degree is the requirement to be a Minister and she claimed that she had a degree, then it is questionable.

Kamraj Nadar was not at all a educated person but he was a wise and intelligent politician who advised the highly educated Pandith Jawaharlas Nehru.

Sonia Gandhi faked her degree. Allegedly she made a false affidavit that she had a diploma from Cambridge University whereas she learnt English from a “teaching shop” called Lennox School (now defunct) in Cambridge town.
Rahul Gandhi registered as Rahul Vinci Gandhi in Rolings College in Orlando or someplace like that, which is a Christian missionary college.
Why did he claim he has M.Phil from Cambridge? University of Cambridge has no record of any thesis you cannot get M.Phil without any thesis.
He first claimed he went to Harvard. There are no records available to prove that he studied in Harvard.
Is Rahul a citizen of India? He is born in India. But the Italian law says that if your mother is Italian citizen at the time of your birth, which in 1970, which time Sonia Gandhi was a citizen (of Italy), then you automatically become a citizen of Italy. And law in India says, you cannot be a citizen of India, unless you renounce the citizenship of another country. Rahul Gandhi never renounced that citizenship because you are required by the law to and give a certificate to Italian government that I have renounced that citizenship. In fact, he uses a Italian passport by the name of Rahul Vinci,

As Smriti has lost both the elections, question of disqualification does not occur! Did she have to provide such an info for Rajya sabha election? If there is a false statement, then the law should apply.
Those who call an intelligent and articulate woman like Smriti "un-pad", should check their facts and mind. We have seen how Rahul tried to Fake knowledge in Time Now interview. And also we have seen what happened under the premiership of highly qualified economist.
So - following should be the qualifications of the ministers in the future
    PM - MBA
    FM - CA, MBA
    Defence Minister - Ex Army
    Coal Minister - Mining Engineer
    Civil Aviation - Pilot
    Communication - IT
    AND
    UPA chairperson - Gandhi surname!!

If there is a criminal case on you, then you are not eligible for any government job, but this law is not applicable to any leader or politician. He may be murderer, rapist or what ever still he can be a member of parliament, member of legislative assembly or a Prime minister.

Right now there are 14 ministers in central govt. and a total of 98 MP's who have pending criminal cases on them (all from BJP)

Before joining army, navy, air force, police you have to go through various examinations and you need to be physically fit, they examine your height, weight, chest, but to become a defense minister all you need is a few votes.

So guys why should we compromise on the knowledge of our HRD minister MRS. SMIRITI IRANI?

There is no way I can compromise the future of education in my country.

SMRITI IRANI IS not eligible for the post of HRD.

Guys its time to wake up and smell the coffee! If Steeve Jobs and Bill Gates can me some of the richest people who are not graduates, why cant you expect someone else can"t do? What is the stand of education today? Graduates come out of college and do not know which field they can apply for a job. Wait, give some time for Smiti Irani to handle her responsibility.

If Steev Jobs or Bill gates are Billionaire, Its because of their hard working, and they don't have any god fathers. Here it is only because of Modi she got HRD Minister.

If an un-schooled Rabhri, Lallu yadav, not knowing even our National Anthem, could be CM of Bihar, anybody can be Minister anywhere in the world. Congress had many learned and unschooled looters grafters and corrupts as Ministers, ridiculing even our CAG and misusing CBI for survival. Having said that, why should Ms. Smrithi contradict herself in her affidavits ?

    Dear readers,

When Prime Minister himself submitted 4 times false affidavit consequently in Degree "Bachelor" only," kyun ki sab ki bahu" is questioned?

The question is how autonomous "Election commission of India" verify the candidates affidavit? What does the law says disqualify or ban from contesting?

Now one can imagine how much worth Billions of assets in politicians own in India which was not verified properly.
