Panaji, Jul 3: Panaji corporation's move to dump garbage next to world heritage monument in Old Goa has kicked off a row with locals pulling up their sleeves to oppose the move.

Old Goa has seven heritage monuments, all of them related to Christian religion, which are topmost in the list of world heritage monuments on western coast. Archeological Survey of India has listed seven heritage monuments including Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral, Church and convent of St Francis of Aesis, Church of St Cajetan, Chapel of Cathrin, Our lady of Rosary Church and St Augustine complex.

Importantly, holy relics of St Francis Xavier, which are kept open for decennial exposition, are preserved in the Basilica of Bom Jesus.

"We have not understood the logic behind Panaji city corporation's decision to dump garbage at Old Goa which 9 kms away from the city. If they want, they can dispose off garbage within their jurisdiction," rued Iris Rodrigues, president, Ribander Citizen Action committee. The committee has raised agitation opposing the garbage dump.

ASI officials confirm that no activity can be taken up within 100 metres of heritage monument. The ASI regulates activities within 200 metres.

The current dumping site is located one kilometers away from the heritage monument. But still, the activists are worried that the stench from the garbage dump will drive away visitors.

"The site identification is in violation of September 2000 notification of ministry of environment and forests which specifically prohibits any landfill site near monument of historical or religious interest," Rodrigues pointed out.

The accusing finger is pointed towards the Goa State pollution control board, which has given no objection certificate to the project.

"It's just permission in principle. The corporation of city of Panaji will be given final NOC only after they acquire the land," stated GSPCB chairman Dr L U Joshi.
