Modi appointed PM, swearing-in on May 26

New Delhi, May 20 (PTI): Narendra Modi, who steered BJP and the NDA to a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections, was today appointed Prime Minister, ushering in a new era of a non-Congress government with an absolute majority on its own in 30 years.

"I came to call on the President. The President has given me a formal letter (of appointment as the PM) and has invited me for oath-taking ceremony on May 26 at 6 pm as we had earlier decided," Modi told the media emerging from the meeting with the President Pranab Mukherjee.
Modi's call on the President came after he was unanimously elected leader of the BJP Parliamentary Party and later at a combined meeting of the BJP and its allies constituting the NDA as leader of the coalition.

Later, a Rashtrapati Bhawan communique said as Modi has been elected leader of the BJP Parliamentary Party and BJP has majority support in the House of the People, the President appointed him the Prime Minister of India and requested him to advise the names of members of the council of ministers.

"The President will administer the oath of office and secrecy on May 26 at 6 PM at Rashtrapati Bhawan," President's spokesman Venu Rajamony said.

In his brief interaction with the media outside Rashtrapati Bhawan, Modi displayed the President's letter appointing him to the top post.

Earlier the President greeted Modi on his landslide victory.

"Welcome, welcome, welcome," Mukherejee said, receiving a bouquet from Modi.
Offering a bunch of flowers, he congratulated him on his "grand victory".

Earlier Report

New Delhi, May 20 (IANS): Narendra Modi was Tuesday elected BJP parliamentary party leader, paving the way for the Gujarat chief minister to become India's prime minister.

At a meeting held in parliament's central hall here, Modi's name was proposed by party patriarch L.K. Advani and seconded by other leaders including Murli Manohar Joshi, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley.

The Modi-led BJP won a staggering 282 seats in the 545-member Lok Sabha, becoming the first non-Congress party since independence to get a majority on its own. The Congress fell to an embarrassing tally of 44 seats, its lowest ever.

"Even though I have to propose the name of the leader, I am supposed to back the name which has been already decided by the party," Advani said.

BJP president Rajnath Singh then formally declared Modi to be their leader.

Singh described the moment as historic, and said this heralded an era in Indian politics that was dominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with all other parties pushed to a distant second as "others".

"This is an unprecedented, historic moment. Although Janata Party secured a majority in 1977 and ousted the Congress, it was a conglomeration of various parties. The BJP is the first party which has achieved this feat on its own," Singh said and added they have made inroads in states such as Kerala and West Bengal where it had been a non-entity in the past.

Singh said he was "happy and thrilled", and described the day as the fruition of party ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya's dream of a "strong, self-dependent, and free" India.

An era of responsibility has begun: Modi

An era of responsibility has begun, said PM-designate Narendra Modi who became emotional Tuesday while delivering a speech after being elected leader of the BJP parliamentary party in Parliament House.

Addressing the party's new MPs and other leaders in the Central Hall of parliament, which he visited for the first time and went down on his knees to touch his forehead to the steps leading to it in reverence to the 'temple of democracy', Modi said the majority given to the BJP in the Lok Sabha was "a vote for hope and faith".

"A government should be one that works for the poor and this is why the new government is committed to the poor of the country and dedicated to the youth of the country as well as our mothers and daughters," said Modi, adding: "The celebrations, excitement will go on but the era of responsibility has begun."

Modi's name was proposed by party patriarch L.K. Advani and seconded by other leaders including Murli Manohar Joshi, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley.

The BJP-led NDA will laterTuesday meet President Pranab Mukherjee and stake claim to form the government.

The Modi-led BJP won a staggering 282 seats in the 545-member Lok Sabha, becoming the first non-Congress party since independence to get a majority on its own. The Congress fell to an embarrassing tally of 44 seats, its lowest ever.

Calling himself a disciplined soldier and vowing to work for the "poorest of the poor", Modi said he would present his government's report card in 2019.

Modi underlined that he should not be seen above the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and credited his party's stunning electoral victory to the BJP's organizational strength. The Gujarat chief minister became emotional when he responded to veteran colleague L.K. Advani's remarks that he had done a favour by leading the BJP in the election.

"Please don't use the word 'kripa' (favour)," Modi said. "A son doesn't do a favour to his mother. A son works with dedication. I treat the BJP as my mother just as India is my mother."

"The party has done me a favour by giving me an opportunity to serve."

Modi said it would be for the first time that the government would be formed under the leadership of a person who was born in independent India.

"We may not have been able to fight for the country's independence but will dedicate our lives to develop this nation and work for the betterment of the people."

BJP president Rajnath Singh described the moment as historic, and said this heralded an era in Indian politics that was dominated by the BJP, with all other parties pushed to a distant second as "others".

    Dear Rajesh,

Even simpler mathematics , BJP got 31% of the total votes polled , that means 69% are still against BJP. Modi as PM of India is good news. Not because he has won from the BJP. He was formerly a RSS but Chai-wala RSS struggling for justice in India where poverty exploded. Still there is poverty in India. Modi's firs job is to reduce if not eliminate poverty .
In my opinion he will do so by creating jobs with various ways from building infrastructure to farms to industry. It will not be a easy task but a task worth doing.
Modi need to get India to dominate the world or to crave greatness to India. The greatness to India is within making India for Indians to live and work and create self- sufficiency in all fields. India has everything from human resource to raw materials. What India needs is Indians to work and keep India clean.
Its not Modi's work to clean India its Indians work to clean India, Modi can just provide the atmosphere.
Modi must however help all Indians to help themselves from industry to farms to self employment. There is no need to build malls or open super stores like Walmart but to enable small shops to flourish, albeit with accountability and due taxes.
India does not have a massive welfare system but India has a great system to allow small men and women to be del sufficient by opening small stores tp family farms.
Agricultural growth is much more important than Industry as India needs to feed millions and food is not grown in Industrial or commercial shops.
So what Modi need to do is make Indians self sufficient, self-employed, self- help, and self- live. Moreover Modi need to enable Indian brain-drain by creating the environment in India. FOr young going to USA, UK, Canada, Australia or Middle east is not the answer, keeping them home is the need of the hour. This can only be done by making Indians Indians first to love the country and patriotic and creating awareness that India comes first in their loves.
Corruption and bureaucracy must be eliminated by Modi, Communal bias must not be tolerated and Modi must make India for Indians and by Indians

Do not forget and give silly excuses later -
Modi has asked (I beg you he said to the voters) voters "Give me only 60 months of rule to transform India".
People have given those 60 months not to NDA but to BJP, to him, with clear mandate so that he may not complain at the end of 60 months.

I am positive he will deliver and we will wait for 60 months to see "What he has delivered"
I hope he delivers and India will be on the road to prosperity.

After all whoever delivers what they had promised, it will be good for all the Indians.

I don't belong to any political party of India. The electorate of India elected Mr. Modi to lead the nation. Under the liberalized economic reforms of India under the leadership of Mr. Rajeev Gandhi and later on by Dr. Singh, now India is ranking as the 3rd richest country in Asia (China-Japan-India).

Now the steering is handed over to Mr. Modi. He has not used his political career to get rich.

He was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth, knows the pain of struggles and lack, so will naturally will do everything for the suffering people of India.
Out of the 1.2 billion people all over the world, 33% (400 million in India) earning $ 1.25/day. I have personally witnessed the sufferings of the poor people in India, spent days with them, touched and hugged them.

So, I am praying for Mr. Modi to be used to help the struggling poor masses of India, the forgotten tribe of the political spectrum. If the vested interested politicians of his own party (99% of them are too rich) are trying to undermine his vision, that will spoil everything.

Also, his vision to eradicate corruption and red tape, if done likewise, it will boost the economy greatly.

Finally, if the minorities are attacked by the street goons at the prayer halls and homes, that news will create greater problems so he has to give greater priority for that issue.

There is no doubt, ´Mr. Modi´s optimism was, however, infectious. Mr. Modi ran on a platform of fundamental economic reform, promising to do for all of India what he accomplished as chief minister of Gujarat, where with liberal policies he engineered a boom. In his electioneering, his message was, “I am from among you, understand you. I know your hopes and dreams and disappointments.”
With this election, India, which prides itself on being the largest democracy in the world, continues to show the world that where there is the will to succeed, not even the size of the population can constitute a constraint. For a country that boasts over 1.2 billion population, and a massive 814 million eligible voters, the marathon election that spanned a period of five weeks and attracted 551 million voters, was historic by all standards.
For Indian politics, the prime loser was Rahul Gandhi, heir of the powerful Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, who would have been prime minister tomorrow, had his party been successful at the polls. Misrule and unimpressive economic management by the Congress have robbed him of his political inheritance. Prices of basic foodstuffs have been soaring beyond the reach of the poor, while scams in public service became a recurring decimal.´
The Gujarat model, Mr. Modi elaborated, places equal emphasis on agriculture, the service sector, and manufacturing, to arrive at inclusive growth. It accords priority to education has increased the number of universities from 11 to 42 in a decade, and strictly monitors the quality of education from primary schools to higher institutions.
Mr. Modi got a strong mandate and he can implement all necessary reforms. But will he be successful?

    Best regards

The following is the GDP purchasing power Parity of world nations.

    Derived from website:

    This is in U.S. Dollars.

    United States - 15,290,000,000,000

    China - 11,440,000,000,000

    India - 4,515,000,000,000

    Japan - 4,617,000,000,000

    Germany - 3,194,000,000,000

And this has been achieved only within a decade rule of Dr. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s rule and a strong support from Soniaji plus constant struggle of congress prime ministers and leaders.

Big Corporates will get land at throwaway prices to setup their business and mint money. In return they will shower BJP with huge funds for elections.
Infant mortality will be highest in the world.
There will be no lokayuktha and no accountability for corruption.
Jobless rate will be highest in the world.
Poor will become more poor and rich will become more rich.
RSS and its sundry organizations will get plum positions.
There will be malls along side shanty towns as the gap between rich and poor will grow.
Malnutrition will be highest in the world.
Indians will get 24 hours power supply in their dreams.
All Indians will get job in their dreams.
Modi has sold a big dream to the voters who voted him to power. He will keep the dream just a dream.

It is a must that the hidden wealth of the Indian politicians of all political parties in the Swiss and other off shore accounts must be brought back and invest in the nation. How, the politicians can hoard wealth in millions? What is their salary level?

We need not have to take time to put them in jail for their greedy nature, but their names be exposed along with the amount hidden. Also, the wealth they have acquired inside India through their political life. If that is too excessive, take that away from them. Start a new banking system exclusively to finance a micro financing system to loan the low income people to start their small business ventures with very low interest. That method was very successful in Nepal.

Before putting any stupid comment think twice. Modi became PM after serving almost 12 years as CM.

Can you just tell me how Rajiv became prime minister immediately after the tragedy?

You have not heard Modi's speech properly. Just read it Once again. "by giving BJP an absolute majority they have voted for hope and trust. People have voted for hope and faith. I will do everything to fulfil their aspirations," he said, adding that he is a man full of optimism.

There should be no room for pessimism and because with pessimism nothing can be achieved.
