Landslide kills four in Georgia

Tbilisi, May 19 (IANS): Four people have been killed in a massive landslide which cut off a highway link between Georgia and Russia, authorities said Sunday.

A total of 164 people have been rescued from a northern border area affected by Saturday's landslide, while at least five were still listed as missing as they had been trapped in their motor vehicles, Xinhua quoted Georgia's emergency management agency as saying.

Of the dead, three were Turkish nationals working on the construction site of a hydropower plant and one was a Ukrainian.

Most of the people rescued from the landslide area are customs personnel serving the Larsi mountain pass over the Major Caucasus Mountain Range and villagers dwelling in nearby areas.
