23 killed in insurgent attacks in Iraq

Baghdad, March 30 (IANS): At least 16 soldiers and seven civilians were killed in separate militant attacks in Iraq Sunday, police said.

In northern Iraq, gunmen attacked an army base in the wee hours in Aiyn al-Jahash area in the city of Mosul, leaving seven soldiers killed, Xinhua reported citing a police source.

In Anbar province in the western region, a suicide bomber blew up his explosives-laden vehicle at a major bridge in the provincial capital city of Ramadi, some 110 km west of Baghdad, killing seven people and wounding 11 others.

The bridge, which is across the Euphrates River and connects the northern and southern parts of the city, is a key route for the local residents. The huge blast badly damaged the bridge, police said.

In an another incident in Anbar, gunmen attacked an army base before dawn and in the fierce clash with soldiers that followed at a village near the city of Fallujah, killed nine soldiers and wounded 14 others.

The province has been the scene of fierce clashes that flared up after Iraqi police dismantled an anti-government protest site outside Ramadi in late December last year.
