Maoists kill five policemen in Chhattisgarh

Dantewada (Chhattisgarh), Feb 28 (IANS): Maoist guerrillas Friday gunned down at least five policemen in a forested area in Chhattisgarh's restive Bastar region, police said.

Dozens of Maoists fired on a police team checking roads for possible concealed land mines in an area about 440 km south of Raipur. The police team was led by Vivek Shukla.

"At least five policemen including Shukla were martyred in the deadly attack," Datewada Superintendent of Police Narendra Khare told IANS. "The Maoists walked away with AK-47s of the dead policemen."

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh denounced the attack as an act of "cowardice" by Maoists.
