Bengal to build 50,000 houses for government employees


Kolkata, Feb 24 (IANS): The West Bengal government will build 50,000 houses under the public-private partnership model for its employees, a minister announced here Monday.

Briefing media persons after a cabinet meeting, Parliamentary Affairs and Information Technology Minister Partha Chatterjee said a scheme to provide housing loans to the government employees was also cleared.

The cabinet clearance came two days after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the housing loan scheme at a function of the state government employees. Rs.100 crore has been allotted for the scheme.

Chatterjee said the land for construction of the houses would be allotted for free by the government to its employees.

The state had a housing loan scheme till 2006.

"We are reviving it. And making all efforts to better it," said Chatterjee.
