Ukraine issues arrest warrant for ousted president

Kiev, Feb 24 (IANS): Ukraine's acting government Monday issued an arrest warrant for ousted president Viktor Yanukovych on charges of mass crimes against protestors in a week of bloodshed in Kiev.

Acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakhov wrote on Facebook that the ousted president and several other officials have been placed on Ukraine's wanted list for mass murder.

Yanukovich fled Kiev by helicopter Friday after signing an agreement with the opposition to end the conflict, according to media reports.

On Sunday, Ukrainian lawmakers voted to hand over the duties of the president to new parliament Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov, one day after the lawmakers ousted Yanukovych from his post and set an early election for May 25.

Yanukovich arrived in the Crimea region late Sunday night, Avakhov said.
