Banking operations hit in TN due to strike

Chennai, Feb 10 (IANS): Banking in Tamil Nadu came to a standstill Monday due to the two-day nationwide strike call given by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), said a union leader.

"In Tamil Nadu around 100,000 employees of nationalised/private/foreign/regional rural banks are on strike for two days - Monday and Tuesday," C.H.Venkatachalam, general secretary, All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) told IANS.

According to him, 90 lakh instruments worth around Rs.64,000 crore were held up because of the strike.

"The instrument value and number would go up further tomorrow when the strike enters the second day," he added.

The strike has been called demanding wage revision, halting privatization of banks, stopping issue of new banking licences and others.

According to Venkatachalam, the service centres - cheque clearing hub - would not work during the strike.
