Report and pic from Sanjay Borkar in Margao

Margao, May 20: Three out of 12 illegal structures and one shanty at Dicarpale, where a landslide had occurred last year in rainy season, killing eleven persons, has been razed by government officials, on Thursday.

There are reportedly 28 illegal structures on the foothills of the hillock which face the fear of another killing landslide, and are erected on Communidade land. As they have obtained electricity connection and ration cards, they claim it as legal.

A demolition squad led by deputy collector Venancio Furtado and jount mamlatdar Ashutosh Aapte, along with 18 policeme, carried out the demolition and within three hours identified the structures and demolished them.

Nine people from the area produced the stay orders and saved their houses from being razed. But the government officials have ordered them to leave the place much before the monsoons and to shift to any other place, as there are chances of further landslide at same place.

Last year, the eleven victims' families had to be paid compensation up to Rs 50 thousand each.
