Colombian police seize a tonne of cocaine

Bogota, Jan 24 (IANS/EFE): Colombia's highway patrol seized 1,234 kg of cocaine in the northern province of Cordoba, authorities said Thursday.

Officers discovered the drugs aboard a truck travelling on the road linking Cordoba's capital, Monteria, with Arboletes in neighbouring Antioquia province.

The cocaine was en route to the port city of Turbo, Antioquia, where it was to be loaded on a boat bound for the US or Europe, police said.

Besides the drugs, police seized 6,800 gallons of biodiesel and 3,400 gallons of gasoline and arrested the two occupants of the truck.

The contraband apparently belonged to the Los Urabeños gang, police said in a statement.

The truck driver and his companion offered the officers a bribe to allow them to continue their journey to Turbo.
