'China-Pakistan n-cooperation for peaceful purposes'

Beijing, Dec 23 (IANS): Cooperation between China and Pakistan in nuclear energy is for peaceful purposes only and in the interest of their peoples, a Chinese official said Monday.

The two countries have cooperated on civilian nuclear energy for years, Xinhua cited foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying as saying.

The spokesperson was referring to the construction of a nuclear power plant in Karachi.

"Such cooperation is entirely for peaceful purposes, in line with international obligations, and subject to the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency," Hua said.

He said the work will help ease Pakistan's electricity shortage. China will continue to provide assistance within its ability.

Construction of Pakistan's largest nuclear power project with Chinese help began in Karachi in November.
