Heavy fog disrupts trains, flights in Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 17 (IANS): A blanket of dense fog enveloped the national capital Tuesday evening, disrupting flights and trains. The Met office has forecast a foggy Wednesday morning as well.

"Eight flights have been cancelled in Delhi today (Tuesday) due to bad weather," said Kapil Sabarwal, spokesperson of the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

According to a statement issued by the airport, visibility at the runway dropped below 50 metres Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, dozens of trains were delayed due to the dense fog, while many were rescheduled.

"Around three dozen trains arriving in Delhi have been delayed while over 20 have been rescheduled," said Northern Railway spokesperson A.S. Negi.

In the afternoon, however, Delhi had witnessed a clear sky after a foggy, nippy morning.

The day's maximum temperature was recorded at 22.6 degrees Celsius, average for this time of the season. The minimum settled a notch above average at 9 degrees Celsius.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Wednesday will see heavy fog again in the morning and evening.

"The afternoon will see sunny skies and the maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 24 and eight degrees Celsius," said an IMD official.

"Foggy conditions will continue in Delhi for the next few days," the official added.

Monday's maximum temperature was 24 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was nine degrees Celsius.
