Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha not doing YRF film, Jaya readies for TV debut

Mumbai, Dec 9: Actor Amitabh Bachchan rubbished reports that claimed he had been signed to do a movie opposite Rekha by Yash Raj Films, to be directed by Aditya Chopra. The rumours are known to have germinated from the photograph, that went viral, of Rekha seated behind Amitabh Bachchan on a flight, sometime in October. He was speaking to the press at the launch of Just Dial search engine here.

Amitabh mentioned that he too had read of the news but reaffirmed that there was no truth to the matter. Amitabh and Rekha had been the lead pair back in the 70s and 80s, and people thanks to the photograph, were quick to believe that the two stars had been convinced to recreate their on-screen magic by working together once more. There had been news of Firoz Nadiadwala and Anees Basmee's futile attempts to rope the two actors together for the movie "Welcome Back", but with their joint refusal lead to the casting of Naseerudin Shah and Dimple Kapadia instead.

Rekha and Amitabh had last worked together about 30 years ago in 'Silsila' along with Jaya Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor and which was Yash Chopra's debut directorial venture, back in 1981. After working together in hit films such as 'Namak Haraam' and 'Mukkadar ka Sikander' the twp had been widely speculated to be having an torrid affair. Even today the mystery of their love story is oft spoken of and fuel for gossip.

Amitabh Bachchan's wife and Samajwadi Party member Jaya Bachchan, is said to be making her debut in TV with 'Vasundhara' a story inspired from a Gujarati novel revolving around the life of a single parent. Amitabh mentioned at the launch that he and Jaya had spoken about her work and since she was keen on doing the daily soap, he too was happy for her. Produced by Endemol, the show is to be aired on Sony Television soon.
