Uttar Pradesh government mills begin sugarcane crushing

Lucknow, Nov 16 (IANS): Crushing of sugarcane started in two government-owned sugar mills Saturday, a government spokesman said.

The official said sugar mills Kisan Sahkari Chini Mill Ramala and Baghpat Co-operative Sugar Mills Limited began crushing sugarcanes Saturday morning, which is in line with the schedule announced by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav a few days back.

Around 1.5 lakh tonne of sugarcane was indented and purchased from farmers of western Uttar Pradesh.

Private sugar mills have, however, refused to start crushing as they first want the state government to announce a minimum support price of sugarcanes for the season.
