Bhatkal, Apr 7: The Bhatkal police had an unusual sight to behold on Wednesday April 5 evening.    The Muslim women of the city laid a siege on the police station demanding the release of 16 persons who had been taken into custody for enquiry by police.

The police had taken into 16 persons including some auto drivers as a precautionary step to avoid any incidents of violence during the car festival of Chennapattana on Thursday April 6.

Having come to know about this, more than 100 women belonging to Muslim community of Mugdom Colony and Azadnagar area laid a siege on the police station demanding the police to release these persons who do not have any criminal background.  They threatened to continue sitting in the police station till the arrested were released.

Though DySP Renuka and others tried to convince them that the arrested will be released soon, the women did not leave the place.

Ultimately, all the 16 of them were taken to tahsildar's office where they were made to sign an undertaking of good conduct.
