Kundapur, Mar 22: An alert temple priest foiled a theft attempt at Venkatramana Temple at Basrur near here on Tuesday March 21 night.  Moreover, a timely tip off to the public also resulted in the arrest of 6 thieves from the group.

A group of 10 thieves had gained entry into Venkatramana Temple on Tuesday night after breaking the front door.  But when they tried to break the main alms box with a stone, temple priest Sridhar Bhat, who lives nearby, woke up and shouted for help.

At this point, the thieves broke the window glasses of his house with the help of soft drink crates.  But not frightened by this, Sridhar Bhat alerted some nearby devotees through telephone.  Immediately people came running to the temple.

Having seen the people coming to the temple, the thieves fled the place.  However, they managed to steal 2 bronze temple bells while fleeing.  But the people who chased them were able to catch 6 of them near Moodlakatte railway station.

The arrested are said to be the residents of Dharwad district. The Kundapur crime branch police are investigating the case.
