Karkala, Mar 17: In a fatal mishap in a quarry at Kairabettu near Nelligudde here, a 12 year-old neighbouring girl was killed on Thursday March 16 evening.

The deceased has been identified as Sunita (12), daughter of Sundar Naik of Kairabettu.  She was playing in the courtyard of her house, when the stone blasted from the nearby quarry hit her on the head.  Sunita was a class VI student of the Sooda primary school.

Initially the quarry owners tried to clear the case by promising some compensation.  But when the locals came to know about this, they protested.  A group of protestors led by gram panchayat member Krishnaraj Rai and former vice president of taluk panchayat Sundar Kotian did not allow the last rites of the child till the complaint was booked against the quarry owner K C Kamat.

Now the Karkala rural police are investigating the case after booking a case against the quarry owner.
