Dysfunctional government top US problem: poll

Washington, Oct 10 (IANS): The dysfunctional US government has become the country's biggest problem, as one-third of Americans expressed their disappointment over the current shutdown, a study has found.

According to a survey conducted by Gallup, about 33 percent of Americans cited dissatisfaction with the government and Congress due to the impact of the government shutdown and the debt ceiling debate. This is the highest percentage reported by Gallup since 1939, Xinhua reported.

The US government partially shut down Oct 1 when Congress could not agree a budget.

The economy has become the second biggest concern of Americans, with 19 percent dissatisfied. Other top ranking problems include unemployment, the deficit and healthcare.

The survey also revealed the approval rating for the Republican Party has dropped to just 28 percent, with the Democratic Party polling 15 percentage points more - the lowest result ever for either party since Gallup began recording ratings in 1992.
