DRI recovers 32 kg gold from Air India flight, four arrested

Chennai, Oct 7 (PTI): Thirty-two kg of gold biscuits, worth Rs 15 crore in the international market, were today recovered from the lavatory of an Air India flight and four persons arrested in this connection, airport sources said.

Based on a tip-off, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials took into custody for questioning Abdul Gaffoor Nasroon and Mohammad Zainul Hussain -- both natives of Kerala, who arrived here by a flight from Dubai around 5.30 am.

Investigations revealed that they had hidden the gold biscuits in the lavatory of the plane, in which they travelled from Dubai and two accomplices-- Mohammad Yousuf Abdul and Mohammad Yasin Abdul Hussain – who were waiting to board the same flight on its second leg to Delhi, supposed to pick them up.

The two waiting with boarding passes to board the flight, scheduled to depart at 6.40 am, were also arrested, they said.

Yesterday when i came in Dubai - mangalore flight there was lot of used toilet paper inside the toilet. It was there everywhere, on the floor, over the commode, on the sink etc. Either someone had loose motion and using the toilet too much, or he was smuggling gold under all that toilet paper. I thought i will peek under the toilet paper in the commode, but i was afraid there might be a big thimingila under all that mess.

The quantity seems to be exaggerated. The cabin baggage permitted per passenger is 7 kgs. Even if they carry only gold we need 5 passengers to reach 32 kgs. I do not expect the crew too have lent a helping hand.
32 kgs is not even the check in baggage allowance these days.
    Mystery of sorts

Density of Gold is 19.3 and 32 kg gold ease as big as 1.5 litre bottle of water.
Most gulf countries do let more than 20 kgs hand baggage, which is evident as those who carry brief cases have weight of alteast 15-20 kgs in hand, filled in with heavy stuff.
From gulf countries as long as a person can carry easily without giving undue attention, no one checks for hand baggage weight. Only lowly paid maid servants and labourers are checked and harassed.

Is something wrong with DRI's evaluation of gold? 32Kg wouldn't cost more than 9 Crores in international markets. Can any expert enlighten readers like me?

32 Kg Gold is huge quantity!
Very surprising, how these smugglers dare to do smuggle
    such a big quantity!

In our Country, everything has reached to its extreme level.
Extreme communal hatred and divisive Politics, corruption, inflation and lawlessness.

It seems now they made U turn to Kasargod instead of direct flight to Mangalore
I think some particular people may not be knowing that smuggling is comes under Haram, they might think that it is Halal. The community leaders should teach them it is also a crime
