Telangana fallout: Curfew continues in Vizianagaram; 34 held

Vizianagaram, Oct 7 (PTI): Curfew on Monday remained in force in Vizianagaram town with security forces patrolling troubled areas in the wake of large-scale violence by anti-bifurcation agitators.

Police have so far arrested 34 persons in connection with the violence and more arrests are expected to follow, DIG (Visakhapatnam Range) P Umapathi told .

"The situation is under control and peaceful. It (curfew) is continuing. We will again study the situation and take appropriate action," he said.

The priority as of now is to maintain law and order and protect the public and private properties, the DIG said, adding that curfew will be in force till normalcy is restored in the town.

Central paramilitary and state police personnel are patrolling Kanyakaparameswari temple junction, Kothapeta, Dasannapeta, Gajularega, BC Colony, V K Agraharam and other parts as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident.

Curfew was imposed in the town in the wake of large-scale violence on Saturday night.

Despite the prohibitory orders, united Andhra Pradesh supporters hit the streets and pelted police with stones, forcing security personnel to fire two rounds in the air to quell mobs.

Vizianagaram, a town in coastal Andhra, has been boiling since the Union Cabinet's October 3 decision to carve out a separate state of Telangana out Andhra Pradesh.
