Don't be too spiritual: Pope tells nuns

Don't be too spiritual: Pope tells nuns

Rome, Oct 5 (IANS/AKI):
Pope Francis Friday berated the nuns whose fixed smiles betray "a lack of joy that comes from within".

"I am so disappointed when I meet nuns who are joyless, who may smile with the smile of a flight attendant but not with the smile of joy that comes from within," the pontiff told nuns at the Santa Chiara cloistered convent in the Italian city of Assisi.

Living in an enclosed order must not be "purgatory", Francis told the nuns.

"Nuns must not be too spiritual, and must endeavour to be experts in humanity in order that convent life is not purgatory," he said.

He urged the nuns to embrace communal living and to live together like members of a happy, loving family.

"Know how to forgive, how to tolerate each other because the devil takes every opportunity to divide us. Nurture friendships with each other and family life. And don't brag!" he told the nuns.

Earlier, 50,000 people packed into the square outside Assisi's medieval Basilica of San Francesco to hear Francis celebrate mass.

The charismatic Argentinian pontiff was on a one-day pilgrimage to the Umbrian hillside town to pray at the shrine of the 13th-century saint whose name he adopted when elected earlier this year.

Francis also met groups of poor, sick and disabled people who were being looked after by Catholic orders or charities.

The Pope said he wants to see an overhaul of the Church, bringing it closer to ordinary people.

During the mass in the church the Priest prays only for Pope,Bishop & the clergy. But the Nuns are not even remembered why? May be this is the reason the Nuns become too spiritual to get special attention from God. Everyone is accepting the fact that Nuns are just wonderful and their huge contribution towards Education, Charity and Missionary work is highly commendable. While praying the Nuns appear too spiritual and it is not shame at all. 'The Church must pray for Nuns too during their daily Services'.

This is exactly what I had asked a brother in a Community one year back. When Jesus calls his people to share the good news , there are a sect of people in the society who only keep praying without contributing in service to humanity .I doubted whether 'God ' will be happy with those nuns who only pray and do not look at human faces nor do service ? I am sure its the Lord spoke through the Pope.Popes words are true words of Wisdom .

The Pope is speaking the Truth from his heart. Everyone knows that there is infight in convents and churches among Priests and Nuns themselves. There is a lot of groupism, favouritism, rivalry there. Heard several cases where nuns have to face fight with brooms and pulling hair and other forms of torture. This is also reported in a book written by a Nun of Kerala too. Some soul searching is required in this regard. Many priests and nuns are in a dilemma as they cannot leave the order after being ordained due to practical difficulties/problems.

    Bible = Book
The word Bible was derived from Greek Biblios. In Latin Biblia
Biblios in Greek which means A Holy Book.
Although I am not knowing Greek but through valid sources.
THE REFERENCE TO THE BIBLE WHICH YOU ARE ASKING IS FOUND IN MATTHEW CHAPTER 1:1

Ask the same question with those who had learned & has thorough knowledge, rather than airing here & thinking I Only know more & its final.
The people who came back from other branches to Catholic Church, have done so after getting all the answers with the same books they didn't think had the answer.

Even though I agree with the Pope , that the joy of your mission should be reflected on your face to show the inner satisfaction, I do want to point out to the fact that in countries like India the contribution of catholic nuns in the field of education, charity and empathy is commendable. Without discrimination , within their given abilities, they have given to the society whole heartedly. I feel they too have the right to lead a life of comfort and respect as they dont get it in equal amount as priests, even though the sacrifice of both of them is almost same.

Good explanation and comments by Victor and Vijay, Mangalore. Dear MR. Agnel udupi. Pope need not utter Bible words only. The Bible is not a dictionary. Pope can use any suitable words from the dictionary. Purgatory means a cleansing place. According to Roman catholic teaching, the state or place of purification or temporary punishment. It need not be a postmortem punishment. Now we find (get) purgatory during our life time. So don't worry about finding word purgatory in the Bible. There is no place like hell or heaven after death .You (we )will find those places during your (our) lifetime. Please help KD Manipal to find few words in the Bible as per his comments.

My Dear priest and Nuns please start helping the youth young age to understand religion, progressive ways of spreading the good news of Jesus to society at large which is required for the time of hour. So many years of studies as priest hood or nun hood and not putting forwards your knowledgeable spirit in developing the youngster in providing religious education at young age which help them to stay in Jesus as well as invite many to love Jesus. We are completely lost here in North America, Europe even Indian priest comes here and then follow the protocol of local practice and get lazier. I have seen so many catholics left religion and joined other religion which is sad to see. Please my dear priest and nuns only praying won't serve in the church only serves your leadership towards the youth who will be a leaders of generation to come. Thank you for your sacrifices for Jesus as priest and nuns god bless you.

The pope in his speech, has, as a guideline of devout life, by saying do not be too mechanical spiritual, does not mean to state to not be too spiritual but he actually intends to depict that path where one becomes mechanically and rigidly compliant to spirituality whereby that compliance conflicts with the true characteristics of one-self and therefore robs oneself of that inner true happiness. He also says such means of rigid forceful compliance is not a process of being in a purgatory i.e which is referred as a means of cleansing sins. (in my view purgatory is implied from the sayings relating to the day of judgement wherein its implicit on that there would be a gap between the physical death and salvation - like Revelation 20:11-15, also many saints like saint Francis De Sales have referred to this purgatory in their epistles)
But at the same time the Pope has set a minimum benchmark of adherence to humaneness virtues namely - forgiveness, love, cohesion and oneness. Therefore his statement intends to never ever interfere with those individuals who operate from a high devout life of spirituality which is a natural characteristic of such individuals whereby inner divine peace flows through that process. In my view, the former path of humanness eventually generally leads to the latter and that is possible when one who operates from humanness path through inner true happiness. I therefore perceive this as a wonderful blessed thought through Jesus and prayers to Almighty that may long live and blessed be our Pope through Christ Our Lord Amen.

The Bible does not mention the exact word “purgatory,” but instead it makes reference to a place which can be understood as what is referred to as purgatory. To claim that purgatory does not exist because the exact word does not appear in Scripture is a failure to understand Scripture.

    What exactly is Purgatory?

The Bible contains references to many Christian doctrines, but fails to call them out by name. One might as well even deny that there is something called the Bible because no such name is found in the Bible. Furthermore, one might as well deny the Trinity, Incarnation, and so forth because these exact words are not found in the Bible.

Dear Mr Antony Cony God has called every one for one or the other mission and state of living. if one is called to be priest or religious other is called to live a good holy family life another may be called to live a single life(spinster). in each vocation celibacy is must. in priestly religious life its total abstinence from the sexual life and in married life its faithfulness to the spouse and not having outside relation or divorcing and marrying other. celibacy means not only to the religious priests but to every one. lets try to be holy and a human being rather than blaming each other. Praise the Lord

Dear Vijay and John. It is good to share some views here.
To begin with it is the Pope who berated the enclosed or cloistered nuns saying that whose fixed smiles betray lack of joy that comes from within. For this point say I contradicted or reminding him saying that even the Priests who are not allowed to marry may have also fixed smiles with them betraying a lack of joy that comes within them examples i.e., various church sex scandals. Recently, Pope himself openly accepted existence of gay priests within the church and he said he can’t judge them leaving them at the Mercy of God. It is the purest sign that joy within the church is missing.
Secondly Pope said, “Nuns must not be too spiritual….convent life is not purgatory’
What about Priests ? Most of them are neither cool nor warm in their prayer life leading them at the mercy of worldly life more than us perhaps. Needless to argue, they are evident to us. Therefore, being suffering from nor cool or nor warm in prayer life is itself is a ‘purgatory’ to them. My intention is not to judge Priests or Nuns but to remind the
Pope objectively that first keep your house in order because there are loopholes or weakness in every religious order. One should not judge or blame the other religious order including enclosed or cloistered nuns.

Particular topic came up from Pope and not from yourself or myself. Next time let us discuss in length about life of laity from every point of view. Vijay, you may have doubt within you, but I lack nothing.

For exactly this reason you are a Holy Father, to shed the hypocrisies crept into the church, for keeping Christ away from the focus of Christian life. The Catholic church needs to be disrobed of his regalia, splendour, riches and get down to the real task of being followers of Christ. Where there is splendour , worldly riches, love of pocessions, there would not be real CHRIST. It is nice to see the Holy Father Sets an agenda for the officials of the Church to think and reinvent themselves to the changing times. But I have a word of appreciation for the Nuns who truly are living witnesses of Christ and Christ like life. It is because of them there is Church today and how it is today. Holy Father let your words not merely remain words but transformed into action at the ground.

THE HAND OF GOD MOVES THE WORLD........BUT PRAYER MOVES THE HAND OF GOD.
It sounds very good to say that work is worship ... and social work is more important than praying .....
Spiritual matters cannot be spoken of or discussed like any other matter. We need to be in a proper disposition. I cannot elaborate it here... so, many of you may disagree with the little that I have written . What I want to point out here is that this comment:- 'Just sitting inside closed doors and praying for others will not do anything good to humanity.' is not made in the right Spirit.
What the Pope has said is absolutely right .... but it is important how we understand it.

Dear Antony Cony I will not agree with your point that celibacy life is lack of inner joy and discriminating in leading a natural family life.It does not apply to all.I agree that there are few sex scandals but it will not deter church from noble deeds.Spirituality can overcome every temptation. From where the priest and nuns come from?Infact they are integral part of our families.Basic mould of human character is originated from family.Hence good families certainly contribute towards purity of a religious.Suppose church allow them to marry as we can see in other denominations there exists another contraversy.Family bondage will restrict free religious will.Christ told those who leave their families for my sake will be rewarded. Therefore celibacy was upheld by the church. From common persons point of view it is very hard in today's society but with devine intervention everything is possible.

They are bound by spiritual life yet prayer life is lacking in them embroiled with church scandals and helpless church has a fixed smile at them seeking Grace of God’s intervention to sanctify them.
Cloistered nuns are part of Roman Catholic family. Does Pope has a word on celibacy life for priests ? Controversy continues. Please do not touch the life of ‘God’s Steel’ Cloistered Nuns.

He is speaking about a practical spirituality, which is translated into a meaningful community living. Though contemplative spirituality aims at reaching out to all with their prayers, in practical, they are cut off from the rest of the world. Pope Francis is speaking about a practical living spirituality where all including clergy, nuns and laity will be equally sharing and witnessing the Christian life.
The present Pope is really a messenger of the time.

Your comments are goes to today's realty. most of our priest and nuns made it simple to say the mass and sit in the church or convent rather spreading the good news to poor, non believer and make every Christians to be a leader with sharing knowledge these priest and nuns learned for years in learning theology, religion etc. today many Christians are not aware of Christianity because our religious leaders taken a short cuts just to say mass whoever comes to church, nuns just pray in convent etc these things can be done by anyone, any where but the main point here is leadership is missing to lead the youth with guidance to spreading the good news of jesus to near, dear one, community at large where these priest and nuns can make, train the youth with their superior knowledge. North America is the worst place where you hardly see any priest and nuns around also you need to book time to meet them, its like meeting a president of USA. I am not here to criticize the royal priest hood or nuns but they can do much more with their knowledge in today's falling apart world where people are leaving the church for no reason just because lack of knowledge in Jesus and its love. again my apologies for commenting this way I love our priest and nuns which is a great sacrifice in their life to offer services to jesus but they can do more for sure

Let's have a look at a middle class lay person. He/she has to struggle to the bone for survival. The present scenario has made life for everyone a pain what with no domestic help, seniors left alone to fend for themselves,so many without jobs, soaring prices .....I could go and on.

Priests and nuns have none of these problems that they need to face. Their 'roti, kapada and makan' is guaranteed. . They are well taken care of not to speak of some living in luxury.

    So where is purgatory?
